the

Organ Recovery Coordinator (ORC)

is responsible for managing the organ donation process from donor referral to organ recovery and follow up, including donor identification and management, and overseeing the recovery and allocation of organs for transplantation and research purposes. This role requires a high level of clinical expertise, emotional intelligence, and the ability to work effectively with donor families, medical staff, and transplant teams. Considerable travel is required. Considerable on-call responsibility.

Duties and Responsibilities

Donor Referral & Evaluation

1. Works in close collaboration with hospital and other Network for Hope staff to evaluate potential organ donors for suitability, including review of the chart, past medical history, admission history, lab data, hemodynamic status, and family dynamics.

2. Responds promptly to donor referrals and conducts comprehensive medical evaluations to determine donor suitability.

3. Coordinates healthcare personnel's participation in organ/tissue donation process.

4. Collaborates with hospital staff to obtain necessary medical records and laboratory results.

5. Ensures adherence to all relevant policies, regulations, and standards.

Donor Management

1. Coordinates the medical management of potential organ donors, including maintaining donor's hemodynamic stability, interpreting lab values, and improving the viability of all organ systems following established protocols while under the advisement of the Administrator on Call (AOC) and /or the Medical Director.

2. Works closely with intensive care unit and hospital staff to ensure effective donor care.

Family Support & Authorization

1. Provides compassionate support and information to potential or current donor families when family support staff are unavailable. Accesses online donor registry; discusses organ/tissue donation opportunities with potential donor families.

Organ Allocation & Recovery

2. Organizes and facilitates the organ recovery process, including scheduling operating room time and arranging transportation logistics.

3. Assists surgical teams during the organ recovery procedure, including organ anatomy, static and machine preservation, packaging and labeling, and transportation to the appropriate destination.

4. Obtains, stores, and distributes adequate samples for tissue typing and organ/tissue placement.

5. Coordinates with transplant centers and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) to allocate organs to suitable recipients.

Documentation & Compliance

1. Maintains accurate and thorough documentation of all activities related to the organ donation and recovery process.

2. Properly and timely documents all donor-related activities in the donor record and completes all required data forms according to established policy and procedure and standards of practice.

3. Ensures compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements and organizational policies.

Other Duties

1. Performs Surgical Preservation Coordinator duties, as needed, such as verification of organ packaging and labeling, delivery/pick-up of organs/typing material to local transplant centers/airports.

2. Coordinates the import of organs from outside Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO) and transplant centers.

3. Maintains appropriate communication with funeral home and the coroner or medical examiner during the entire donation process and provides all appropriate follow-up.

4. Participates in quality assurance and improvement initiatives.

5. Participates in post-donor review. Develops a revised action plan as needed.

6. Participates in regularly scheduled in-person and virtual team, departmental, and company-wide meetings.

7. Assists with precepting new clinical staff as needed.

8. Collaborates with Partnership Services staff to provide education to hospital staff such as in-services, presentations, and after-action reviews.

9. Participates in a work group or special project within the organization, as assigned.

10. Follows all established health and safety standards.

Education, experience and training

Education:

Bachelor's degree in health-related field preferred. Associate degree with four years' experience acceptable. RN or other healthcare licensure preferred. Exceptional candidates with significant health-care experience may also apply.

Experience:

2 years of clinical healthcare-related experience required. 1 year of experience in critical care, emergency, donation or transplant settings preferred.

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration:

Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator

( CTPC) required or must be obtained within one year of meeting CTPC minimum eligibility requirements.
