Gillions Funeral Services is Dunedin city's locally, and family owned and operated full-service funeral home.
We provide a wide range of funeral services to our community.
They are personalised, meaningful and based around our client families' wishes.
We are expanding our team and looking to recruit another funeral director to join us.
What we're looking for We are looking for someone who is experienced, very well organised and with great problem-solving ability.
You will be calm under pressure and a great team player.
You will have a sensitive and empathetic approach to working with people during difficult times, an eye for detail, and the ability to manage multiple demands.
You also need to be computer literate and comfortable operating AV equipment and other technology required for the modern funeral.
You will be a great communicator - both verbally and in written communication.
You will need to be physically well co-ordinated and capable of performing the tasks required - lifting the deceased onto stretchers and into caskets, manoeuvring in complex spaces on occasion, standing for considerable periods, and directing and assisting pallbearers at funerals and graveside.
You will be required to be on the duty roster which means some weekend, public holiday and on-call work as well.
Although our core office business hours are Monday - Friday, 8.30am - 5.00pm, and Saturday 9.00am - 1.00pm there will be times when you will need to work extended hours at short notice so flexibility must be manageable for you.
Our local community and business relationships are important to us so it would be an advantage to have local connections.
Applicants for this position should have a full clean New Zealand Drivers Licence and New Zealand residency or a valid NZ work visa.

JOB DESCRIPTION SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Meet with families, finalise requirements and arrange all aspects of the funeral service.
Direct the funeral service and burial (if applicable).
Sensitively ensure the necessary details are accurately recorded for death registration purposes, contracts are signed and financial aspects discussed and agreed.
Undertake the transfer of the deceased as required.
This can be from private homes, rest homes, hospitals, and hospice.
When on-call, this may take place outside business hours.
Assist the mortuary staff with casketing, dressing and presentation of the deceased if required.
Participate in the maintenance and cleaning of the facilities, vehicles, and equipment.
Prepare caskets as required - including lining, attaching handles and fittings.
Liaise with the third-party suppliers on service requirements.
Direct people through facilities as needed for interviews, viewings, and funerals.
Record data in and provide information from the company's proprietary computer software package for funeral services.
Competently operate the computer software used to demonstrate music and/or video to client families.
Competently operate the Microsoft Office range of products especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Oversee the facility when other team members are off site.
As required act as the initial point of contact for both phone calls and visitors.
Understand and comply with the occupational health and safety legislation as pertains to this position.
Understand and comply with the legal requirements as pertains to the funeral industry.
Undertake ongoing training and professional development as required to meet the operational and developmental needs of the company.
Where appropriate, promote the pre-arrangement and pre-payment options to clients.
Meet roster requirements as per employment agreement.
Take responsibility for specialist activities within the organisation as and when needed.
Participate in community and promotional activities for the business.
Provide the committal words and ceremony for simple farewells.

During work time, and such other times as may be reasonably required, dedicate all effort to the execution and fulfilment of the duties, responsibilities, obligations and instructions related to employment.
Demonstrate through own actions a commitment to Health and Safety at work when undertaking work or observing others in the workplace.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION Some experience in relation to the funeral profession is highly desirable.
Achieved N.C.E.A.
level 3 or above (or the equivalent).
Ability to liaise compassionately with clients, their families, and friends across all generations, including different social and cultural groups.
Ability to work as part of a team and without direct supervision.
Infinite patience and ease with taking direction when required.
At ease with death and the expression of grief.
Excellent organisational and event planning skills and the ability to organise groups of people.
Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to pivot 360 degrees at short notice.
Computer and audio-visual system skills - familiarity and competence with technology.
A general understanding of music and video formats, software, and equipment.
Full clean driver's licence.
Confident with driving larger vehicles (hearse/van).
High standard of personal presentation and grooming and confident with being in the public eye including in an on-line environment (funerals being recorded and/or streamed).
Physically co-ordinated and capable of performing the tasks required - lifting the deceased onto stretchers and into caskets and manoeuvring in complex spaces on occasion, standing for considerable periods, and directing and assisting pallbearers at funerals and graveside.
Ability to efficiently incorporate new technologies into the day-to day operational process.
Ability to self-manage and meet deadlines which at times can be within a pressured environment.
