Summary
Intern position with an emphasis on providing assistance to the Water Resources-Environmental Staff. This position provides assistance with asset management and inspections related to natural resources and water resources programs.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Assists with use of GIS and survey equipment to collect public infrastructure asset data, storm water best management practices, tree inventory, and other water resource and natural resource assets.
Perform field inspections of trees for asset management and for diseased tree management projects.
Assist with implementation of Stormwater Pollution Prevent Plan (SWPPP) six minimum control measures (MCM):

MCM 1 - Public Education and Outreach programs.

Assist with development of educational information regarding water quality topics.

MCM 2 - Public Participation/Involvement programs.
MCM 3 - Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) programs.

Assists with investigating, collecting evidence and responding to suspected and reported illicit discharge.
Assist with illicit discharge inspections of high priority areas.

MCM 4 - Construction Site Stormwater Runoff Control programs.

Assists with erosion control inspections of active construction sites.

MCM 5 - Post-Construction Stormwater Management programs.

Assist with asset management and inspection of public and private BMPs.

MCM 6 - Pollution Prevention/Good Housekeeping programs.

Assists with inspection and documentation of municipal stormwater infrastructure.

Assists with the collection and review of as-built record plans of municipal improvement projects and developer-installed public improvement projects.
Performs other related duties as apparent or assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduate enrolled in an accredited college, university program or technical degree program for physical or biological sciences, environmental studies, natural resources management, water resources or related field from an accredited college/university.
Desirable Qualifications
Completion of one academic year.
Additional Information
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Knowledge of the principles and best management practices associated with protecting, preserving and managing natural resources and storm water management systems.
Familiarity in the use of GIS programs.
Ability to communicate ideas and explanations clearly in English, both orally and in writing.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, that conform to prescribed style and format.
Knowledge of and ability to apply proper English, spelling, and punctuation.
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications, legal documents and professional journals.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts, knowledge of algebra, geometry and trigonometry and knowledge of surveying.
Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Ability to use mobile devices, survey equipment and common Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as web-based email and timesheet software.
Ability to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to work with the public in a friendly, tactful manner.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position involves a combination of office and field work. Includes exposure to seasonal weather conditions, uneven terrain, and construction-related dust, noise and machinery. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level is usually moderate in the office environment but can be loud in the field.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and move about the office; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to speak, hear and see in order to share information, receive instructions and complete tasks using a computer screen. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Daily contact with Engineering Department and other departmental staff.
Occasional contact with the public.
Occasional contact with developers, consultants and contractors.
