The Product Owner (PO) within Broadcom sits between the Product Manager (PM) and the Development Team with primary PO responsibility and value coming from understanding and contributing towards the product strategy and executing on that strategy by breaking down the large strategic ideas and intentions into development items with concrete outcomes and then further with the development team into manageable work items as Enablers or User Stories which can be completed. In addition the PO is the Voice of the customer, and will bring in User informed Design Thinking based approach to the development and engineering processes to ensure that the right work is done at the right time to achieve the best outcomes for our customers.
Product Owner Core Responsibilities
Operates as part of an extended Product Management team, usually reporting to Product Management
Understands how the Enterprise backlog model operates with Epics, Capabilities, Features, and Stories
Uses PI Objectives and Iteration Goals to communicate with management
Establishes and sequences backlog items based on program priorities, events, and dependencies with other teams.
Works with other Product Owners and the Product Management team in the Value Stream.
Team Backlog Ownership
The principal responsibility of the PO is to maintain a backlog of work items with order and detail sufficient for the team to work on for the current and next iteration. A story must satisfy the team's definition of ready.
Cross-Team and Management Reporting
To maintain cadence across many teams globally, PO communication is key to ensure inter-team dependencies are communicated and risks to team productivity are shared and mitigated. The PO is responsible for raising information to enable management by exception and is accountable for communication with their PO peers in the Value Stream.
Customer Engagement
Our business success is driven by our customers and in turn by their success. In order to ensure our products solve our customers challenges we continually iterate on our solutions asking our customers for their feedback.
A PO works with their PM and field peers, creating opportunities to visit customers and observe users in their environment whenever possible.
Developing a Design Thinking approach to arrive at meaningful user stories with which the Product manager and Architect can define Hills, and execution includes the feedback loop is a key component to the role.
Regular Sprint Reviews are one of the responsibilities of the PO who decides when it is appropriate to share progress and with which internal and external stakeholders. In establishing the Sprint Review event, the PO will invite their customers describing the value they may expect to receive. Typically performed over WebEx, a Sprint Review will showcase the most recent development.
Presenting at industry conferences on their product, the technical vertical into which our products integrate and on relevant adjacencies is strongly encouraged for all PO.
When a support case is escalated to the development team for further action, the PO must be aware of the case and may manage the case to completion.
Collaboration with Product Manager
The Product Owner stands back to back with the Product Manager, working together on the same broader problems but each tackling different areas of work and levels of detail. Whilst the Product Manager is considered 'outward facing' meeting potential customers and buyers, the Product Owner is considered 'inward facing' focused on existing customers and colleagues in development and support. The Product Manager answers the question "Why" do we choose to do this.
Collaboration with Development Team
Consisting of architects, UX, developers, QA, Information Engineers and R&D management, the Development Team produce the vast majority of consumable output and answer the question "How" will this thing get done.
