Why does the job exist?
To provide supervision for analysts and analytical testing for the General Microbiology section. This helps the New Mexico Scientific Laboratory meet testing requirements to ensure outbreaks are identified, and potential biothreat organisms are identified in order to ensure the health and safety of the citizens of New Mexico.
How does it get done?
To assign and directly supervise at least two (2) full time equivalent employees, act upon leave request, conduct performance evaluations, and recommend disciplinary action as applicable. Incumbent will perform scientific analysis on General Microbiology specimens to determine the presence of infectious diseases including select agents and food-borne bacterial outbreaks from veterinary and human clinical specimens for the interest of public health and epidemiological surveillance. Responsibilities include maintain supplies, ensure quality control compliance per regulatory requirements, provide emergency testing and participate in on-call rotation, as well as train and supervise in microbiological techniques, and ensure grant requirements are met. The section and staff maintain Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP) certification and adherence to OSHA, Scientific Laboratory, and Department of Health (DOH) policies.

Ideal Candidate
Candidate must have ability to work in a Biosafety Level 3 environment, be able to perform and teach test methods, lead validations of new methods, manage data and reporting to external partners including the CDC, and submitters. Ideal candidate will have experience with laboratory testing, biosafety, inventory and supply maintenance, supervision, and quality control in compliance with regulatory agency requirements. Ideal candidate will have good communication skills and understand ongoing and emerging needs and facilitate communication within the laboratory.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences with emphasis on chemistry, mathematics, and/or computer science and two (2) years experience in biology, microbiology, virology, parasitological and/or molecular biology specialization in a laboratory setting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements
Capable of passing Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Investigation (DOJ/FBI) security clearance for access to laboratories holding Select Agents, as defined by 42CFR73, Possession, Use, and Transfer of Select Agents and Toxins. Must obtain Hepatitis B and Rabies vaccination, able to differentiate colors, use of sterile techniques, and good manual dexterity. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate. In state and out of state travel may be required. Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is required.
This position is designated a safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting supporting a fully functional laboratory. There is extensive personal computer and phone usage, and repetitive trunk/arm/hand and neck movements. The fully functional laboratory contains biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer. Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
