Job Summary and Qualifications
The Pharmacy Technician Specialist assists the pharmacist in the performance of the pharmacy daily routine. This shall be carried out in accordance with all state/federal laws, JCAHO Standards, and hospital/department policies and procedures. May be required to work at Ocala Regional Medical Center, West Marion Community Hospital, and/or The Free Standing Emergency Department as needed.
- Accurately assists the pharmacist in filling physician orders and according to the departments established priorities.
- Identifies critical issues, prioritize workload and communicate to appropriate personnel any issues in a timely manner.
- Greets people entering the department; smiles and makes direct eye contact; gives full attention to the person, maintains an even voice level.
- Answers telephones, answers questions and refers or transfers callers, answers telephones by the third (3rd) ring, identifies the department and name, speaks clearly, addresses the caller by name when appropriate.
- Complete daily work assignments with minimal supervision or direction.
- Accurately maintain required documentation logs.
- Responsible for maintain medication storage and security as per regulatory requirements throughout the organization.
- Performs quality control and performance improvement functions as assigned.
- Completes all education requirements and/or other activities needed to maintain competency.
- Accurately performs and documents monthly medication storage area inspections as assigned.
- Performs basic billing functions.
- Accurately performs required calculations.
- Accurately and safely compounds and labels medications and parenteral admixtures.
- Accurately packages and prepares pre-packages and unit dose medications for dispensing as assigned.
- Always utilizes aseptic techniques in the preparation of parenteral products.
- Complies with facility policy and procedures and regulatory requirements. Follows FL law for pharmacist supervision of technical duties as defined in regulations.
- Completes all duties assigned according to established policy and procedure.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures of the pharmacy/hospital.
- Requests assistance in the decision-making process and problem-solving as necessary.
- Retrieves data for Q. I. monitors and makes recommendations to improve care, resolve identified problems, and improve existing pharmacy programs.
- Always obtains a final check from the supervising pharmacist before releasing any prepared parenteral product, before releasing any packaged medication, or dispensing any medication.
- Compliant with all USP 797 shift/daily/monthly requirements (i. e. cleaning laminar airflow cabinets and biological safety cabinets, wearing personal protective equipment, etc. )
- Assists the Supervisor and Director of Pharmacy in developing, revising and improving departmental policies and procedures.
- Adapts personal schedule to meet hospital/departmental needs.
- Assists in coordinating the orientation of new employees, both professional and technical.
- Carries out any other duties deemed appropriate by the Director of Pharmacy.
- Attends and participates in monthly departmental staff meetings and is responsible for information communicated at the meetings.
- Performs daily ADC routines as assigned (i. e. restocks, outdates, discrepancy resolution, loading and unloading, etc. )
- Is familiar with adult crash carts, pediatric emergency bags, nursery crash cart, ED pediatric crash cart.
- Appropriately and timely notifies the pharmacy inventory manager of products that need to be reordered.
- Processes medication returns and restocking to the pharmacy.
- Replenishes ADCs, emergency cart trays, medication kits, medication boxes and floor stock accurately and as needed.
- Accurately performs inventory functions in RXMS system.
- Accurately transports medications and other pharmacy supplies in a timely manner to the appropriate area.
- Provide basic technical support for automated dispensing machines and other pharmacy computer systems.
- Prepares all work records needed for the day at their designated times including the discontinued, transfers, and discharged lists of parenteral preparations and efficiently processes these reports before they are dispensed to the patient care areas.
- Complies with ongoing processes to monitor outdates as per policy and procedures.
- Performs receiving and check in of medication/supply orders as defined in policy and notifies the pharmacy purchaser/buyer of any shortages, overages or damages of products.
