Construction Manager - Supply Chain

Loblaw Real Estate is comprised of several individuals with varying talents and functions from Civil qualifications to engineering, estimating, design and real estate to name a few.

The successful individual would be joining a dynamic team of high performers and will be reporting directly to and supported by myself, Director of Construction with 30 years of retail and industrial construction experience.

Loblaw Companies Limited is seeking an experienced and driven Senior Construction Manager to join our dynamic LRE Construction-Supply Chain team.
This role is responsible to assist with the project management of the two new Loblaw distribution centers in Ontario.
The first is nearing completion, the second will start in May of 2025.
The Construction Manager will also be responsible for ongoing projects across the portfolio of Loblaw's distribution centers in Canada.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, possesses strong leadership qualities, and excels at managing multiple complex projects while adhering to strict timelines and budgets.

Responsibilities:

Project Management:

  • Assist with and manage all aspects of Automated Distribution center from initiation to closeout, ensuring alignment with Loblaw standards and the Supply Chain requirements.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, including scope definition, budget development, scheduling, risk assessment, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee and coordinate the work of the general contractor, subcontractors, and vendors, ensuring adherence to project specifications, quality standards, and safety regulations.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate potential risks and challenges throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Operate almost exclusively from the project site and act as project liaison between the Loblaws team, the General Contractor, Witron (The automation supplier) to monitor progress, enforce safety protocols, and address any arising issues.
  • Prepare and deliver regular project status reports to stakeholders, including senior management, internal departments, and external partners.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Collaborate effectively with internal departments, including Real Estate, Legal, Planning, Estimating, and Supply Chain, to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Liaise with the landlord and external consultants to coordinate construction activities and minimize disruptions to existing operations.
  • Foster strong working relationships with external stakeholders, including contractors, vendors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Communicate effectively with all levels of the organization, providing clear direction, timely updates, and constructive feedback.

Financial Management:

  • Manage project budgets effectively, tracking expenditures, reviewing invoices, and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
  • Utilize SAP and Tango systems (asset) for invoice processing, budget management, and project documentation.
  • Participate in the tender process, reviewing bids, negotiating contracts, and recommending awards.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Architecture, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field is an asset.
  • 5+ years of proven experience managing Industrial construction projects, ideally within multi-temperature and ASRS distribution center environments.
  • Strong understanding of building sciences, construction methodologies, and relevant building codes.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, specifications, and contracts.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
  • Experience with Autocad, Revit, SAP and Tango systems is a strong asset.
  • PMP certification is a strong asset as well.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively throughout Canada, with short periods away from home.
