Manager, Geographic Information System (GIS) ProgramsAs the research division of Aurora College, Aurora Research Institute (ARI)'s mandate is to improve the quality of life for NWT residents by applying scientific, technological and indigenous knowledge to solve northern problems and advance social and economic goals.Job InformationThe Manager, Geographic Information System (GIS) Programs is located in Inuvik and reports to the Director, Western Arctic Research Centre (WARC).
The incumbent is responsible for managing the GIS programs budget, plus third party projects, as well as the software, data, and equipment maintained by Aurora Research Institute (ARI) and has signing authority up to $10,000.The Manager, GIS Programs develops and conducts research programs in geomatics, remote sensing, and related fields at ARI and in collaboration with academic, industry, government, aboriginal government, and public partners.The Manager, GIS Programs develops and monitors special projects, and training opportunities that leverage geomatics and remote sensing.
The Manager collaborates with scientists working in the Northwest Territories in the development and execution of their programs.
The incumbent must have strong entrepreneurial skills and be able to identify, seek out and solicit funding for regional and territorial projects.The Manager, GIS Programs is responsible for providing GIS support and technical advice to researchers and the Aurora College Community (students, instructors, staff and ARI).
The Manager is also responsible for administration and supervision of contract/casual staff, performing budgetary functions, as well as producing a variety of written reports and proposals.The Manager, GIS Programs may supervise staff and student interns and will provide direction on geomatics related projects designed to promote geospatial awareness.
The incumbent will promote the outcomes of these projects through regional school and community engagements.QualificationsTypically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
Completion of a Master's Degree in Geography or in a Physical or Environmental Science5 years' work experience in geomatics including 2 years of financial and project managementAdvanced knowledge of commercial off the shelf GIS and remote sensing software packages including ESRI, PCI, ENVI3 years successful experience in fundraising for research projectsJob DetailsThis job opening is for a One Year Term.
