Question 26 / 40:  Estimate (through calculation) the time required for a 2 mm diameter brass ball bearing to fall through 30 cm of 100% glycerol at 20 degrees C. Which of the following values best matches your estimate?
A  1 minute
B  5 minutes
C  30 minutes
D  1 hour

Explanation:

First find the properties of glycerol and brass. Note that the viscosity of glycerol is about 1000 times greater than that of water. Then use the plot on page 97 of the resource for subunit 6.1. We may first assume that the flow is laminar around the sphere and then go back and check the value of Re. We equate the force from gravitational acceleration to the buoyant force and the viscous drag and find that the terminal velocity of the brass sphere is about 1.1 mm/s. Re = 0.002; hence the flow is laminar.
