This is the landing page for the CH 301 Thermodynamics module taught at the University of Texas at Austin.

Thermodynamics is the beginning of the quantitative evaluation of why things happen.

To begin this journey, answer this question: Which of the following happens when you put an ice cube in a cup of coffee?

  • The ice cube cools the coffee, or
  • the coffee heats the ice.

Thermodynamics helps us answer this question. More importantly, we'll be able to assign numbers to the amount of heat that is transferred when ice is placed into a cup of coffee. With that knowledge, we can begin to answer much larger questions.

In case you're curious, the coffee transfers heat to the ice. Begin the module to find out why.
