The mechanism is simple. Let’s first experience this in a more direct way, and use another pair of sense organs on your body: your eyes. This is a 2D cancellation.
This is the famous standard DSP processing image, Lenna. Figure 1 is the original one, and Figure 2 is its inverted image, which means every pixel is the complementary color of the original.
Our eyes can perfectly detect the difference between these two images. Now imagine setting the transparency of both images to 50%, and put one of them on the top of the other one. It feels like seeing through two think films. As you can see in Figure 3, it finally results in a complete blank sheet!
