The Cardiovascular Operating Room Registered Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional nursing care to patients undergoing cardiovascular surgeries. Collaborating with a dedicated surgical team-comprising cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and surgical technologists-this position ensures patient safety and comfort throughout the surgical process. We are seeking a skilled and compassionate RN who has expertise in cardiovascular care, surgical procedures, and high-acuity operating room environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Preoperative Patient Preparation:
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients' medical histories, allergies, and medications in preparation for surgery.
- Prepare patients both physically and emotionally by clarifying procedures and providing necessary information.
- Ensure completion of all preoperative orders, including labs and imaging as directed by the surgical team.
- Utilize a surgical checklist to confirm patient identity, surgical site, and planned procedure for optimal safety.
- Assist in positioning patients effectively on the operating table to facilitate the surgical process.
Intraoperative Nursing Care:
- Prepare the sterile field and ensure readiness of all surgical instruments and equipment.
- Monitor patients' vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels during surgery.
- Administer medications and fluids as directed by the anesthesiologist or surgeon.
- Support the surgical team during complex cardiovascular procedures.
- Maintain a sterile environment and adhere to strict infection control practices.
- Quickly respond to any changes in the patient's condition, including complications.
Monitoring and Documentation:
- Accurately document patient status and interventions in the electronic health record (EHR) as per hospital protocols.
- Record significant intraoperative events, medications administered, and other interventions.
- Monitor and report the patient's responses to anesthesia and surgical interventions.
Postoperative Care:
- Facilitate the transfer of patients from the operating room to the recovery unit or ICU while ensuring stable vitals.
- Observe patients for potential complications post-surgery and act swiftly if necessary.
- Educate patients and their families about postoperative care, including wound care and recovery guidelines.
- Administer pain management and other prescribed medications to aid recovery.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Maintain clear communication with the surgical team to ensure cohesive patient care.
- Work closely with preoperative and postoperative teams to provide seamless care.
- Engage in surgical briefings and debriefings to discuss outcomes and areas for improvement.
Emergency Response and Crisis Management:
- Be prepared to manage critical emergencies during surgery, such as cardiac arrest.
- Implement advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) protocols and other emergency measures effectively.
- Collaborate with the surgical and anesthesia teams to address unexpected complications.
Sterilization and Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure all surgical instruments are sterilized and functional prior to procedures.
- Quickly troubleshoot any equipment malfunctions to minimize surgical delays.
- Adhere to infection control standards and proper use of PPE.
Patient Advocacy and Support:
- Champion patient safety and comfort at every stage of surgery.
- Provide emotional support to patients and families, addressing concerns and offering reassurance.
Professional Development:
- Stay updated with advancements in cardiovascular nursing and surgical techniques.
- Participate in ongoing education and certification opportunities in cardiovascular care.
- Collaborate with peers to enhance departmental practices and improve patient outcomes.
