DEPUTY REGISTER OF DEEDS

Kenosha County is seeking a detail-oriented, customer-focused individual for the Register of Deeds Office. The selected candidate will be part of a team committed to serving the needs of the public.

2025 Hiring Range: $23.43 - $26.62 per hour

Position Summary and Job Duties

The Deputy Register of Deeds reviews, records, and scans documents, and compiles and maintains an index of those real estate documents in accordance with Wisconsin Statutes. In this position, you are a sworn deputy of the Register of Deeds which involves tremendous responsibility in that you represent a County Constitutional Officer in the execution of statutory duties.

Provides customer service and assists the public by relaying the services provided by the Register of Deeds Office
Receives real estate documents and reviews for conformance to statutory requirements
Reviews Real Estate Transfer Return per Wisconsin Department of Revenue requirements
Electronically records received documents using the land records management system
Receives money from customers, enters into cash receipt system, and prepares transaction reports and daily deposits
Prepares financial transactions and reports such as journal entries, financial statements, balances, and cash control summaries
Maintains paper and electronic files, indices, and recorded documents
Files, preserves, protects, and issues certified and uncertified copies of birth, marriage, death, divorce, and domestic partnerships in Kenosha County
Performs other work as required or assigned

Success FactorsKnowledge of:

State statutes related to real estate and vital records and any fees regarding platting, real property, titles, cemeteries, and vital records
Wisconsin Department of Revenue Database
Statewide Vital Records Information System Database
Financial and banking systems
Other County services

Skill in:

Use of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Use of office equipment, including computer, calculator, scanner, and phone
Basic mathematic computations
Clerical functions (i.e. typing, data entry, filing, organization, and customer service)
Verbal and written communication

Ability to:

Read and interpret legal documents and reports, understand their purpose to record appropriately
Listen, communicate, and convey information and regulations clearly over the phone and in person
Understand and follow written and oral instructions
Organize self and office in order to meet schedules and deadlines
Read, interpret, and apply applicable Wisconsin State Statutes, regulations, and requirements, regardless of personal convictions.

Take initiative and multi-task
Remain professional and courteous at all times
Maintain confidential information
Work respectfully in a diverse and inclusive environment

Job Requirements, Education, Training and Experience

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent
Work experience in a financial/banking institution and/or title company
Or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Preferred Education and Experience

Associate degree
Work experience in real estate, legal support, and/or accounting
