Island Health is seeking an experienced Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to join our dynamic healthcare team for our hospital in Anacortes, WA. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Chief Nursing Officer is responsible for overseeing all hospital-based clinical departments within the organization, ensuring high-quality patient care by meeting the Island Health Purpose, focusing on the voice of the patient, managing clinical staff, and collaborating with other departments to achieve optimal patient outcomes, all while adhering to regulatory compliance and strategic goals. This is accomplished by creating a positive, collaborative work environment, developing and implementing objectives, policies and procedures; ensuring that operations comply with established standards and regulations; preparing and overseeing business reports, including annual budgets; providing guidance to staff and acting as a resource to colleagues; and directing personnel functions to include recruiting, hiring and retention of staff, and handling disciplinary actions.
The Chief Nursing Officer must be driven to achieve continuous improvement, have the ability to lead teams of varying size and levels of aptitude, act as a community leader and spokesperson for clinical areas and as a representative of Island Health, and possess the necessary leadership skills required for this position.
Chief Nursing Officer Job Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership:
Establishing and maintaining clinical practice standards, guidelines, and protocols to ensure quality patient care.
Overseeing clinical operations across various departments, including nursing units and specialty services.
Monitoring clinical performance metrics and identifying areas for improvement.
Implementing evidence-based practices and clinical innovations.

Staff Management:
Recruiting, hiring, and developing clinical staff including nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Providing ongoing clinical supervision, coaching, and mentoring to clinical staff.
Addressing clinical performance issues and ensuring staff compliance with policies and procedures.

Quality Improvement:
Leading quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
Monitoring and analyzing clinical data to identify areas for quality improvement.

Strategic Planning:
Participating in the development of the organization's strategic plan, with a focus on clinical priorities.
Identifying and implementing new clinical programs and services to meet patient needs.

Regulatory Compliance:
Ensuring adherence to all applicable healthcare regulations and standards (e.g., DNV).
Monitoring compliance with clinical documentation and reporting requirements.

Working closely with the CEO, CIO, CMO, and other executive leadership to align clinical operations with organizational goals.
Collaborating with departments like finance, marketing, and information technology to support clinical initiatives.
Building strong relationships with key stakeholders including payers, referring physicians, and community partners.
Establishing mechanisms to assure nurses throughout the organization are involved in shared governance and decision-making structures and processes that establish standards of practice and address issues of concern.
Establishing and enhancing a culture of evidence-based decision-making in clinical and management initiatives.
Job Requirements:

A minimum of ten (10) years of nursing experience with at least three (3) to five (5) years of experience in leadership demonstrating progressive scope of responsibility.
Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) required with a Master's degree in Nursing, Leadership, Healthcare Administration or related field strongly encouraged.
Must maintain current Registered Nurse license issued by the WA Department of Health.
NIMS Training:
ICS-100, ICS-200, and ICS-700 completed within 6 months of hire.
Significant experience in clinical practice and leadership roles within a healthcare organization.
Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, quality improvement methodologies, and clinical operations.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.
Proven ability to lead and manage diverse teams of healthcare professionals.
