Job Title: Teacher of the Hearing Impaired
Supervised by/Reports to: Director of Special Education
FLSA Status : Exempt
Job Goal:
The Itinerant Teacher of the Hearing Impaired will provide direct and/or consultative special education services to students with hearing impairments ages 3-21. The students served will be students found IDEA eligible under the category of Hearing Impairment. The teacher may be assigned students in multiple schools and must travel from assigned schools/students to provide services. The services provided will enable students with hearing impairments to learn in a variety of educational settings.
Qualifications:
Current Alabama professional educator certificate
Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Special Education with Hearing Impaired (HI Certification) or Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education or related field from an accredited college/university
Recent documentation of sign language proficiency (SLPI)
ASL Proficiency preferred
Demonstrate understanding of federal and state special education laws.
Knowledge of special education policies and procedures.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Team player with strong collaboration skills.
Demonstrate understanding of inclusive education and differentiated instruction.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Participates in Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) meetings (Referral to Eligibility meetings.
Develops Individual Education Programs for students with hearing impairments.
3.Collaborates with the Audiologist in recommended assistive technology/FM systems/equipment, or alternatives, as appropriate, to promote student involvement, participation, and success in all learning environments.
Communicates with parents/guardians and school personnel on a regular basis throughout the school year.
Consults and communicates with outside agencies as needed.
Determines individual and class needs.
Supervises students in educational settings.
Provides direct/or consultative special education services to students with hearing loss/hearing impairments.
Establishes objectives and develops and implements a program of instruction that meets the individual needs and abilities of students.
Provides instruction consistent with student's Individualized Education Program goals, objectives, and benchmarks.
Use and implement strategies, methods, and materials appropriate to the student's abilities, needs, and learning styles.
Demonstrates knowledge of assistive technology for students with hearing impairments including, but not limited to FM systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants.
Monitors assistive technology/FM equipment for appropriate functioning, need, and use.
Develops instructional activities that are consistent with local and state courses of study and curriculum guides.
Implements activities using a variety of techniques that utilize instructional time to meet
objectives.
Promotes student self-advocacy activities.
Assists general education teachers in the location, preparation, and development of materials for the inclusion of students with hearing impairments in the general education program.
Assesses student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives and student outcomes and maintains appropriate evaluation documentation.
Communicates to students and parents/guardians (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
Keeps detailed documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
Coordinates, conducts, and participates in IEP meetings for students with hearing impairments.
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a functional learning environment and atmosphere in the classroom and in other areas of the school.
Actively participates in and works with other school personnel in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials and participates in the planning of effective instructional goals, objectives, methods, and curriculum.
Completes all required documents and paperwork in a timely fashion (Progress Reports, IEPs, student data/logs, mileage forms).
Exhibits positive human relations skills.
Demonstrates proficiency in written and oral communication.
28. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local board policy, and state and federal rules and regulations.
Participates in required Professional Development activities.
Engages in personal professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and leadership.
Maintains proper certification by attending college, workshop and professional development courses.
Demonstrates a high degree of professionalism and ethics, working cooperatively with the Board, the Superintendent, administrators, certificated and non-certificated personnel, parents, and students.
Attends all faculty meetings, PTA meetings, and other meetings as required by the Building Principal.
Performs co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and other school related duties (hall,lunchroom, playground, drop-off and pick-up, bus, etc.) as assigned by the Principal(s).
Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger dexterity, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
