Description

Under the immediate super vision of the Marine Sports Coordinator, the Lifeguard/Instructor is responsible for guarding their assigned area of responsibility, responding to any level of incident around the entire aquatics facility and beach area, enforcing the center rules fairly, being responsive to guest requests , ensuring safety, being patient and enthusiastic while teaching and holding productive lessons; setting up and cleaning up lesson station, maintaining communication and relationships with the participant and/or parents of the participant, and other tasks assigned by supervisors.

Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE):

  • Maintains constant surveillance and visually scan of assigned area of responsibility every 20 seconds.
  • Walks the area to monitor activities, provides instructions and prevents accidents.
  • Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and responds to all illnesses and injury incidents around the entire aquatics facility immediately and appropriately.
  • This includes, but is not limited to performing Lifeguarding skills, First Aid, CPR, and others until arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Provides general information on pool and beach operations to guests.
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards; enforces aquatic facility rules and regulations.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and orderly facility. Inspects facility regularly and report any unsafe conditions/equipment to supervisor immediately.
  • Maintains equipment incident to work and inspects and ascertains that collective actions are taken to repair buoys, floats, ropes or other equipment installed as safety measures or to restrict or control beginners in shallow water.
  • Attends and participates in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Promotes, participates and assists in facilitating aquatic programs to all ages, using a curricula set up by Sports Parks and recreation.
  • Maintains records of all training activities.
  • Provides guests with swimming skills test.
  • Holds productive and engaging lessons for participants of all ages; follows the provided curricula; keeps accurate and timely records of all lessons.
  • Maintains open communication with guests, participants and/or participants parents.
  • Sets-up and monitors cleanup of facility and beach daily.
  • Fills out reports for incidents or other records for reference.
  • Performs additional duties assigned by supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of the twelve school grade or its equivalent.
SPECIAL NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Upon eligibility and certification from the Division of Personnel, all applicants will be referred for training/testing for the following:
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, Water Rescue, First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Certification, Water Safety Certificate.
  • Pre-employment/employment testing of lifeguarding skills and knowledge, including but not limited to:
  • Swim 300 yards non-stop, treading water for 3 minutes without hands, back-boarding skills, swim 20 yards, pick up a 10-pound brick off bottom of water and swim it back within 1 minute 40 seconds, and take lifeguard written test.

Position Factors

FACTOR 1- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
  • Knowledge in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard.
  • Knowledge in American Red Cross WSI for the Learn to Swim Instructor
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Good decision-maker.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and writing.
  • Ability to work as an individual and also within the framework of a team.
  • Understand and abide by the departments customer service standards.
  • Maintain personal physical endurance and agility necessary to perform job functions.
FACTOR 2 - SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
Supervision is received from the immediate supervisor in the forms of conferences, review of reports submitted and evaluation of effectiveness of activities.
FACTOR 3 - GUIDELINES:
Guidelines consist of applicable laws, safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
FACTOR 4 - COMPLEXITY:
This is specialized work dealing with first response of mostly aquatic and water sports activities. It involves planning and developing of activities for the needs of the community. It also involves guarding assigned area of responsibility, responding to any level of incident around entire aquatic facility and beach area. The employee in this position works on various shifts.
FACTOR 5 - SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of this position is to assure safety on the various beaches in the department, protect and serve the community aquatic sport activities for the benefit of all in the community. It is also to stimulate development of younger athletes where they can attain the highest level of achievement in aquatic sporting activities.
FACTOR 6- PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Contacts are made with participants in the event of an emergency as a first responder. Contacts are made with various groups, professionals, individuals, the public and organizations.
FACTOR 7 - PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
The purpose of the contacts is to promote safety, maintain constant surveillance and visually scan of assigned area of responsibility every 20 seconds. Walk the area to monitor activities, provides instructions and prevents accidents.
FACTOR 8 - PHYSICAL DEMAND:
The person in this position must be cognizant of all that is going on around him/her. He/she must be in good physical health, and must be able to take part in spotting activities if, and when required.
FACTOR 9- WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed outdoors, to include daily water contact, sun exposure, and chlorine contact.
