POSITION SUMMARY
An employee in this class is required to perform janitorial and related duties, many of which may require exerting physical strength. The employee is usually assigned to the housekeeping section to perform a variety of general cleaning tasks to maintain patient rooms, offices, hallways and other assigned areas of the hospital. Work is reviewed by the Housekeeping Supervisor other supervisory personnel upon completion of assignments for compliance with instructions given. Work requires an ability to learn specific tasks rather than prior experiences.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, improvement performance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Dusts furniture, woodwork, equipment and dust mops' floors.
Polishes & cleans fixtures in utility rooms and bathrooms.
Operates mechanical floor cleaners, polishers and vacuums; damp mops rooms, halls, stairways and public areas.
Remove refuse and trash from nursing units to garbage storage bins; assist with loading & unloading and moving of supplies and small equipment on the ward.
Cleans vents, fans and other equipment using vacuum machines.
Cleans fixtures, top of windows, door frames and high areas using a ladder.
Gather and disposes of trash and waste materials including biological waste; Buffs, strips, waxes, and polishes floor.
Cleans and disinfects all fixtures, floors, mirrors, windows, doors, and walls of bathrooms.
Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings; Attends meetings as required.
Changes curtains as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION

High School Diploma or equivalent.
Some experience as a janitor or other work involving performing cleaning services. Prior experience in an acute care facility preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that apply to the practice of housekeeping processes in an inpatient care setting.
Knowledge of material, equipment and methods commonly used in cleaning and other janitorial work including ability to read and understand MSDS.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted within the course of the work.
Ability to work rotating shifts.
Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the public to be served.
Ability to work well independently
Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills are essential.
Ability to work in a highly visible position undergoing significant changes with multiple constituents, each with demands exceeding resources.
Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work in a climate-controlled and well-lighted environment with a smoke-free policy. Employee will work throughout the building daily. Has Category 1 risk of exposure to infectious diseases, but receives training in hand hygiene practices, Universal Precautions and has access to personal protective equipment if direct exposure is anticipated; is subject to interruptions and noise daily.

Medical and Dental Coverage
Enrollment
The Virgin Islands government offers to full-time employees and their eligible dependents, a group health and dental insurance plan.

Full-time employees must enroll within thirty-one (31) days of hire unless they can provide proof of medical coverage from another source. An employee who does not enroll within 31 days of employment will be automatically enrolled in the health insurance plan with single coverage.

If an employee fails to enroll dependents within the initial eligibility period he/she must wait until a period of "open enrollment" is announced or have a qualifying event as determined by the health insurance carrier to enroll dependents or make changes to their coverage.

Effective Date of Coverage
If enrollment forms are received on or before the 6th of the month, coverage will be effective on the first day of the first month following the receipt of enrollment forms. If enrollment forms received on the 7th of the month or later, coverage will be effective on the first day of the second month following the receipt of the enrollment forms.
Example:
Date Forms Received May 1st May 8th January 6th February 7th
Coverage Effective Date June 1st July 1st February 1st April 1st

Dependent Coverage
Dependents of eligible employees may participate in the Group Health and Dental Insurance Program according to the terms and conditions imposed by the Health Insurance Board of Trustees and/or the carrier. Eligible dependents are the employee's:

Legal spouse;
Natural children;
Adopted children; and
Step children.

When a new dependent is acquired, you must enroll them within thirty-one (31) days after acquiring such dependent. When enrolling a dependent at any time, the following may be required:

Birth certificate;
Marriage certificate;
Adoption papers; and/or
Legal papers of appointment.

Various other documents may be required to determine the eligibility of the dependents.

Cost of Coverage
The GVI contributes toward the cost of Health Insurance for each employee enrolled under the Group Health Insurance Program. The GVI reserves the right to change the amount of the employee contribution w.
