DEPARTMENT: ORFLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPTPOSITION REPORTS TO: Registered Nurse-OR SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: N/ACLASSIFIED/UNCLASSIFIED: ClassifiedBARGAINING UNIT: SIUPOSITION SUMMARY
This individual is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instrumentation, patient equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures and patient care.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

  1. Generates a content list to accurately prepare sets; inspects each instrument for cleanliness and good working condition; assembles instruments when required; includes the appropriate chemical indicator to verify the item has been exposed to one or more sterilizing conditions; chooses the appropriate packaging material to maintain sterility.
  2. Restocks instrument sets with designated levels of orthopedic implants.
  3. Reviews the surgery schedule to assure preference list are developed and implemented for surgical cases; completes case cart tags for surgical cases pulls the supplies and instruments using the printed surgeon preference list; scans bar coded sets to the case cart; logs case carts number on dispatch list and sends cart to surgery.
  4. Inspects folds, prepares, sterilizes, and stores surgical linen.
  5. Loads the sterilizer rack correctly to ensure proper sterilization; scans/loads items and prints load content sheet; selects cycle and verifies parameters are correct for loaded item
  6. Unloads sterilized items using proper techniques; checks chemical indicator to ensure sterilization has occurred.
  7. Verifies that all parameters have been met on sterilizer cycles.
  8. Inventories and restocks specialty carts with sterile disposable supplies and instrumentations.
  9. Performs departmental cleaning.
  10. Responsible for entering and maintaining accurate data for the department's computerized instrument tracking system.
  11. Performs other duties as directed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. High school or equivalent.
  2. Experience in Sterile Processing or applicable hospital experience preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
  1. Knowledge of universal precautions to avoid or reduce personal exposure to blood and body fluids; understands and follows basic written safety standards related to environmental, physical, mechanical, electrical, chemical and biological standards.
  2. Ability to follow oral and written directions.
  3. Ability to relate with tact and understand to deal with parents, doctors, staff and all other persons contacted during the course of work.
  4. Ability to employ sound judgment in the planning and execution of assigned duties.
  5. Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that apply to the practice of in an inpatient care setting.
  6. Knowledge of hospital/departmental policies and procedures, emergency protocols, Joint Commission, Center for Medicare and Medicaid services and all other local and federal regulatory standards
  7. Ability to make presentations before management, public groups, and staff.
  8. Knowledge of analytical and grammatical skills necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  9. Familiarity with spreadsheet and overall computer skills.
  10. Ability to work with a wide variety of other professionals and staff engaged in the delivery of health care services.
  11. Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.
  12. Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the public to be served.
  13. Ability to work well independently including without administrative support when required.
  14. Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills are essential.
  15. Ability to work in a highly visible position undergoing significant changes with multiple constituents, each with demands exceeding resources.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work in a climate-controlled and well-lighted environment with a smoke-free policy. Employee will work in an office and throughout the building daily. Has Category 1 risk of exposure to infectious diseases, but receives training in hand hygiene practices, Universal Precautions and has access to personal protective equipment if direct exposure is anticipated; is subject to interruptions and noise daily.

Enrollment
The Virgin Islands government offers to full-time employees and their eligible dependents, a group health and dental insurance plan.

Full-time employees must enroll within thirty-one (31) days of hire unless they can provide proof of medical coverage from another source. An employee who does not enroll within 31 days of employment will be automatically enrolled in the health insurance plan with single coverage.

If an employee fails to enroll dependents within the initial eligibility period he/she must wait until a period of "open enrollment" is announced or have a qualifying event as determined by the health insurance carrier to enroll dependents or make changes to their coverage.
