QUALIFICATIONS
:
State certification as determined by the Alabama State Department of Education and the American Speech and Hearing Association
Demonstrated aptitude/skill for job performance responsibilities.
Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of student behavior in his/her area of certification as well as policies and procedures relevant to program implementation and participation.
Knowledge to interpret assessment data, group students, and develop methodologies and strategies conducive to individualized instructional needs.
Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
Knowledge of student academic growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
Ability to plan and implement lessons based on system and state courses of study and the needs and abilities of students.
Ability to recommend, select, and maintain equipment or special materials needed to implement assigned students' IEPs.
Knowledge of special education rules and regulations.
Effective skills in oral and written communication to fulfill IEP requirements and communicate to students, parents, support agencies and other faculty and staff.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
Proficient use of technology to meet instructional, communication, and record-keeping performance responsibilities.
Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student and school issues.
Ability to effectively collaborate with general education teachers and other special education teachers.
Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.
Knowledge of instructional and behavioral strategies and techniques used to work with students with articulation, fluency, voice or language disorders.
JOB GOAL
:
To provide appropriate services children with communication disabilities (those children with language, speech or hearing disorders) and to provide consultative services for school personnel.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
:
Organizes and conducts language and speech screenings in the schools.
Organizes and conducts hearing screenings in the schools.
Performs visions screenings for students referred for a speech or language evaluation or for students undergoing a reevaluation for continued eligibility for speech or language services.
Evaluates and diagnoses children with speech and language disorders through use of standardized tests, informal assessments, and data collection.
Assumes responsibility for developing IEP's for students on case load and assisting with the development of IEPs for other students being served.
Serves on/leads eligibility teams to determine which students have a speech or language disability that requires specially designed instruction.
Consults with principals and teachers regarding the scheduling of children for therapy, per the IEP.
Coordinates the Language, Speech and Hearing Services Program with other school programs.
Prescribes and implements therapy for those children with communicative disorders.
Provides individual and/or group therapy for children with language, speech, or hearing disorders.
Refers students to other school personnel for special services.
Refers students, when necessary, to various community agencies and physicians.
Provides information to teachers about pupil progress in therapy.
Monitors student's participation and progress in regular education program by collaborating with regular education teachers.
Provides consultative services to regular or special classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, and parents in order to give them information on communicative skills development, special materials, and procedures to be used in helping children develop appropriate communicative behaviors.
Suggests materials for planning programs in speech improvement in the classroom.
Maintains appropriate records regarding children's progress in therapy.
Maintains records and medical information regarding children with hearing impairments in order to convey the needs of the child to the classroom teacher.
Conducts parent conferences.
Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
Models and maintains high ethical standards.
Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
Maintains expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives.
Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment.
Keeps supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
Serves on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals and priorities.
Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
Prepares all required reports within required timelines and maintains all appropriate records.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
Uses technology as an instructional tool and in the management of special education process.

EVALUATION
:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
