POSITION PURPOSE
Madison Gas and Electric is seeking a Safety Intern for Summer 2025 to assist our Safety Department in the development and implementation of safety programs, policies, and procedures. This is an excellent opportunity for a student who is interested in gaining practical safety experience in the utility and construction industries.
WORK SCHEDULE
Interns will work full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer months, starting mid-May through early September with a mix of in-office and field activities
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
Conduct safety observations and audits of facilities, equipment, and work sites
Identify potential hazards and recommend corrective actions
Assist in the investigation of unplanned events to determine root causes and develop effective preventive measures
Participate in safety training programs and assist in the development of training materials
Participate in safety meetings and assist in the development of safety communication materials
Maintain safety records and prepare reports as needed
Keep up to date with current safety regulations and industry best practices
QUALIFICATIONS
High school degree or equivalent; must be enrolled in an accredited university or college program, preferred area of studies include Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health and Safety or related field
Basic knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
Strong business acumen, communication, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills
Must be able to work effectively in a team environment

JOB LOCATION
The position requires a mix of in-office work and field visits, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life. We offer free, on-site parking and are located near biking trails and bus stops. Many employees enjoy the use of our many on-site EV charging stations.
