SUMMARY:

The Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving is responsible, in coordination with the Associate Vice President, for planning and building the development programs at the American Mathematical Society, as well as for raising major outright and deferred gifts. In partnership with staff and volunteer leadership, the Director forms relationships with individual AMS members and constituents for the purpose of securing charitable gifts in support of the Society's mission and work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects through the giving cycle from research and identification through engagement, solicitation, gift closure and stewardship focusing on gifts of $5,000 and above
Maintain the planned giving program to achieve sustainable, long-term growth of the philanthropic enterprise at the AMS
Review and enhance the moves management system for building the donor pipeline of major and planned giving prospects
Help create customized solicitation strategies and donor relations materials to engender new donor relationships and maintain support from existing donors
Identify and leverage the talents of AMS members, volunteers, staff and others to facilitate the solicitation of donors and increase ongoing charitable support
With the Associate Vice President, identify and prioritize new initiatives, needs, and opportunities that could benefit from development efforts
Develop expertise in and persuasively communicate the Society's vision, mission, goals and fund offerings to its donors, constituents and the public in all appropriate settings
Other duties as assigned

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Associate Vice President
Meets regularly with AMS donors, leaders, and members of the mathematics community
Collaborates with AMS departments to identify prospects and funding needs and priorities

Bachelor degree from accredited college/university required; advanced degree preferred
Experience with leadership of staff and volunteers strongly preferred
Minimum of seven years development experience, with demonstrated success in soliciting and closing major gifts and securing bequest intentions
Experience working with university faculty; familiarity with STEM preferred but not required
Results- and people-oriented with an ability to identify and integrate donor interests with AMS funding needs and priorities.
Ability to travel several times per year at regional and national levels to visit donors and attend AMS meetings when needed.
Work effectively with donors, high level volunteers, AMS staff, and other community stakeholders
Superior interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills and a perceptive listener
Collaborative approach to improving/maintaining development systems and operations
Competence with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook; computer and database literacy; social media

Ability to travel 15% to 20% on extended overnight trips domestically and internationally by commercial airlines and able to lodge in public facilities when needed.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices
