The Kinetic Group seeks a motivated engineering professional to support our Lewiston ammunition production facility as an engineering intern. Candidates pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, computer science, industrial electronics technology, electro-mechanical technology, physics, chemistry, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

(Experience, education, licenses, certifications, and specific knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position. )

Student currently enrolled in an accredited technical college or university pursuing a degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, mechatronics, computer science, industrial electronics technology, electro-mechanical technology, physics, chemistry, or related discipline.

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, organizational, and time management skills.

Proficient at handling ambiguity and dealing with multiple priorities.

Continuous improvement and results oriented.

Strong interest in small caliber ammunition design and manufacturing.

Ability to pass background checks to allow on-site possession of explosives

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION

(Knowledge, skills and abilities currently used to perform essential functions)

Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related discipline.

Responsibilities

Development of cutting-edge new ammunition products and manufacturing technologies.

Design experiments to test and qualify new ammunition products. This will involve handloading ammunition.

Design and build various mechanical fixtures and components to aid in the manufacture of ammunition.

Troubleshoot and solve minor problems incurred in production departments.

Review, modify, and update engineering documentation such as SOP's, process specifications, engineering drawings, CAD models, etc.

Qualifications

Enrollment in or completion of one of the listed degree programs.

Familiarity with the use of firearms and ammunition.

Knowledge of safe firearm handling practices.

SolidWorks experience.

Understanding of statistics, probability, and experiment design.

Experience working in an industrial manufacturing environment.

Displayed mechanical aptitude and ability to understand complex mechanical systems.

Fabrication and machining experience.

Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related discipline.


Provide analytical and engineering support to copper plating, nickel plating, and metal parts wash departments

Design experiments to improve copper plating and wash process consistency.

Provide technical assistance to operations and support to engineers.

Ammunition testing in a variety of firearms will be required.

Ensure compliance with all EPA, DEQ, EOS, and DoD specifications and protocols.

Develop procedures for chemical testing and evaluation that align with department needs.

Familiarity with Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Production Process Specifications, Supplier Requirements, Engineering Document Control, Hazards Analysis, Project Feasibility Evaluations, and Full Process Release Reviews as necessary for project completions.

Balance multiple projects across several departments while working with a variety of leaders and stakeholders.


Enrollment in one of the listed degree programs.

College chemistry including courses in Analytical, Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry.

A high level of communications & presentation skills.

Computer experience with MS Excel & MS Access.

Strong personal relationship skills to work with vendors, internal customers and production crews.

Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Industrial Electronics Technology, Electro-Mechanical Technology, or related discipline.


An Electrical Controls Engineering Intern will work on the design, implementation, and maintenance of electrical control systems in automated manufacturing equipment.

Troubleshoot issues with electromechanical systems. Resolving these issues might require modifications to PLC ladder logic or replacing and configuring electrical hardware components.

Assist in the design and buildout of electrical control cabinets for newly implemented automated equipment.

Interact with engineering, production, and maintenance departments to identify system requirements and implement the requirements in electrical control systems.



Interest in a career in electrical controls and automation.

Displayed mechanical aptitude and ability to understand electromechanical systems.

Experience using and modifying PLC ladder logic, motion control, and motor control. Allen Bradley experience is preferred.

Ability to read and understand electrical prints and component spec sheets.

Hobby-level experience with electromechanical systems such as robotics, building controls, Arduino, etc.

Physical Requirements: Employee will be sitting the majority of the time, with some walking and standing. Minor lifting objects over 10 lbs. , carrying, stooping, and kneeling to access books and reports, transport paperwork and materials, and to retrieve files. Some local travel and work outdoors. Manual dexterity for extensive computer work and writing. Hearing, speaking, and vision are required (with or without correction).

Mental Requirements: Must communicate effectively in verbal and written formats. Reading comprehension and basic math skills are a requirement. Flexibility to effectively deal with a variety of people and situations and to handle interruptions and multiple tasks simultaneously. Quick thinking and problem solving to readily assimilate information. Ability to maintain tact and highly professional manners. Initiative to effectively complete tasks with little supervision. The ability to identify and appropriately handle confidential information.

Working Environment: Work is done in an office environment, with some time spent in the manufacturing plant, copper and nickel plating departments, chemistry lab, energetics manufacturing departments, engineering machine shop, engineering load lab, and test tunnels. This exposure subjects incumbents to temperature changes, dirt, dust, noise, vibration, moving objects and mechanical parts, plating chemicals, lead, machine tool lubricant mists, equipment and explosive hazards. Co-worker support, guidance and reinforcement are readily available.
