SUMMARY:

Under supervision of the attending Physician or designee, the IR Physician Assistant provides care to inpatients in the hospital and out-patients in office or hospital setting directed by practice protocols.
This position contributes to physician's effectiveness by identifying short-term and long-range patient care issues that must be addressed; providing information and commentary pertinent to deliberations; recommending options and courses of action; implementing physician directives.
IR Physician Assistants will assist the physician with interventional radiologic cases and perform image-guided medical procedures independently.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Independent performance of image-guided medical procedures under the supervision of an attending Physician including but not limited to:


Chest post placement
Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement
Tunneled and non-tunneled central venous catheter insertion including dialysis catheters
Fine and core needle biopsy of lung, solid organ, lymph node, or other structures
Drainage catheter placement for abscess, seroma, or other fluid collection
Lumbar puncture and myelography
Catheter exchange or repositioning
Paracentesis and thoracentesis
Joint injection and aspiration
Any other procedure for which adequate proficiency is documented within the physician assistant's scope of practice

Assist the attending Physician with interventional radiologic cases such as embolization, stent, EVLA, and phlebectomy.
Perform fluoroscopic imaging and/or procedures included but limited to sonohysterography, hysterosalpingography, arthrography, and GI fluoroscopy
Perform therapeutic intervention including but not limited to the prescribing of medications (according to practice protocols, state, and federal guidelines) and interventional procedures.
Interpret routine results and preliminary interpretation of complex results or other exams (to be reviewed with the attending).
Preliminary interpretation of diagnostic medical imaging tests including radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and positron emission tomography (PET)
Assessment of patient appropriateness for moderate or other forms of procedural sedation such as general anesthesia including but not limited to evaluation of Mallampati score and American Academy of Anesthesiology (ASA) classification
Inpatient and outpatient consultations in both acute care and clinical settings with provision of associated services including but not limited to history and physical examination; ordering medical imaging, blood, and other testing; completion of appropriate documentation; and provision of prescriptions for medications or medical services, where appropriate.
Completion of pre- and post-procedure clinical assessments and documentation including but not limited to history and physical examination.
Dictation and sign-off of patient encounters / procedures.
Consultation with allied medical and surgical services for facilitation of patient care needs within interventional radiology including but not limited to requests for inpatient admission
Assisting with the review and subsequent scheduling of interventional radiology procedures.
Acts as interface between patients and insurance companies if medically necessary, complete TDI, out of work and insurance forms.
Adherence to all infection-control policies and protocols, thereby maintaining a safe and clean working environment.
Compliance with all federal, state, and local legal and professional requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions
Maintenance of professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
Maintenance of professional learning, specifically the annual requirement of 25 continuing medical education hours
QUALIFICATIONS :


Completed an accredited physician assistant program.
Current, unrestricted licensure to practice as a physician assistant in the State of Rhode Island.
Current certification by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants.
(NCCPA).
Maintain active ACLS/BLS certification.
Be eligible for employer provided professional liability insurance coverage of a type and in the amount as required by the Board of Trustees.
Current unrestricted DEA and RI Substance registration (if applicable).
Must possess excellent organizational skills and strong interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Walks and stands intermittently throughout the day.
May lift and position patients and supplies up to 50 pounds.
Ability to move patients from scanner table and transport patients in wheelchairs and/or stretchers.
Ability to crouch, reach and lift to allow appropriate manipulation positioning and placement of ancillary equipment.
