What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an experienced Nuclear Engineer with a nonproliferation and export control background to contribute to established Sandia programs. The selected candidate will work within a technical science and engineering environment working in conjunction with Sandia staff on interdisciplinary projects that involve applying integrated technical judgment. This would require using multiple scientific methods to recognize and formulate problems, collect data through observation and experimentation, and formulate and test hypotheses about the uses and deployment of advanced technologies in support of US nonproliferation, arms control, and WMD security goals.

On any given day, the specialist will be called on to:
  • Plan, conceive, conduct, and manage research and development projects on nonproliferation and counterproliferation topics.
  • Provide decision insight to customers in complex domains to advance nonproliferation mission space.
  • Conduct systematic analysis of international affairs, foreign relations, and scientific and engineering principle, and advanced concepts and technologies for nuclear security, international sanctions enforcement, multilateral agreements, and international export controls.
  • Create new capabilities and approaches to seemingly intractable nonproliferation problems.
  • Demonstrate experience on sanctions enforcement and UN Security Council Resolutions, nuclear nonproliferation and WMD issues internationally, experience with international organizations, export control regimes, trade practices, and financial transactions.
  • Work with international multilateral organizations including preparing position papers, demonstrated success in securing project funding through BAA proposal writing, attending, and presenting at international conferences and meetings, developing briefing materials, and briefing high-level officials.
Some domestic and international travel will be required. The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary. Salary Range

$109,300 - $217,400
• Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require
  • Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics, or relevant field, plus one (1) or more years of relevant experience; Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience in the following:
    • Nonproliferation, regional security, export control, and threat analysis.
    • Designing, planning, and executing research and development projects.
    • Drafting analysis product for USG customers.
    • Managing internal and external customer relationships, particularly with a USG client.
  • Background in securing external funding through proposal development, engaging with sponsors and stakeholders on opportunities, technology needs, and training gaps.
  • Active DOE Q-level or DOD Top Secret Security Clearance.
Qualifications We Desire
  • Demonstrated experience working in a teamed environment, as a contributor and leader.
  • Previous experience with export licensing and the regulatory environment for the evaluation and control of dual use goods. Microelectronics and nuclear domain experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with NNSA nonproliferation and technical cooperation programs.
  • Ability to implement ideas into existing projects and provide creative solutions to a variety of problem sets.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in an ambiguous environment and adaptability to a rapidly changing work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines.
  • Relevant publication record.
  • Strong project management, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct briefings for high level domestic and international audiences.
  • Leadership experience, preferably with a specific focus on nonproliferation issues.
  • Ability to cultivate new contacts and preserve or improve existing relationships with customers, partners, or the technical community.
About Our Team

The mission of the Regional Security & Analysis Department is to build global capacity to prevent, counter, and reduce nuclear threats to US national security by addressing all proliferation phases from motivation and development to achievement and retirement. We focus on threat and gap analysis for regional and global issues; international export controls; and research security across multiple domains. Our approach is to partner with regional experts and organizations to create networks of nonproliferation professionals who work toward cooperative international engagement to reduce threats to national and global security.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U. S. government agency (e. g. , DOD).
