The Roadway Design Unit is comprised of a diverse team whose primary purposes are to produce and review roadway design plans, lighting and electrical plans, and provide technical expertise on these subjects to internal and external partners. For more information about the Unit, please watch this

In this position you will:

Provide technology and design support to NCDOT staff in technical Units and Divisions, and private engineering firms as it relates to the preparation of roadway design plans.
Provide business support to the Roadway Design Unit.
Troubleshoot and respond to inquiries from NCDOT staff and private engineering firms related to the use of MicroStation, Geopak, Corridor Modeling, and Open Roads Technology (ORD) and other software platforms utilized during plan production.
Develop and maintain roadway design ORD workspace standards and coordinate with other technical Units and Information Technology, as needed, to ensure a holistic approach to ORD implementation.
Develop training materials associated with the use of various software platforms used by engineers in the preparation and review of roadway design plans.
Develop and deliver presentations and/or training to various users either in a classroom or online setting.
Assist in training lower-level engineers and Transportation Engineering associates to develop their knowledge of roadway design and the design software platforms.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / CompetenciesApplicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

Knowledge of civil engineering principles (especially as it relates to highway design), AASHTO guidelines, and NCDOT policies and procedures.
Experience producing engineered design plans and construction estimates for all stages of the project development process.
Experience using Bentley's OpenRoads Designer software and ORD workspaces.
Demonstrated ability in preparing technical training documentation and presentations and communicating the information in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
Demonstrated ability in training lower-level engineers and Transportation Engineering Associates.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
