What You'll Do:
Manage drivers and create capacity by maintaining seated truck count, accurate driver PTA's, mitigating driver turnover.
Build and maintain quality relationships with drivers.
Establish company performance objectives with drivers and monitor performance. Perform annual performance review with each driver in fleet.
Ensure on time service is met; address possible service issues in a timely manner while coordinating with Customer Service and Load Planning departments. Repower loads as needed.
Promote safe operations by monitoring and ensuring driver's participation in all safety related training, hours of service compliance, Haz Mat, HVP, Homeland Security, and drug testing compliance. Reminds driver of the importance of operating truck safely on a daily basis.
Ensure fuel and routing compliance.
Meet or exceed utilization expectations of the fleet by verifying the status of all drivers and addressing any service alerts.
Contact each new driver assigned to Fleet Manager's fleet via phone call. Allow open discussion to determine driver's needs and clarify Fleet Manager's expectations of driver's performance.
Document any issues that may lead to disciplinary action or termination. Make recommendation as to the action needed to resolve the issue, including write-ups and terminations.
Route drivers to terminal to address any performance issues. Lead the conference by addressing issues with driver and establish ways to resolve. Document all issues and resolutions.
Responsible for the general welfare of a driver while he/she is over the road.
Ensure driver compliance with all company policies and act as liaison for drivers with issues concerning other departments.
Approve driver's home time requests and serve as a liaison between the driver and Load Planning to ensure freight is available for the drivers to get home on time.
Instruct driver on where to pick up and deliver loads; while reviewing deadhead miles and approve out of route miles prior to dispatch. Provide alternative routing solutions in cases where severe weather or driver related issues require it.
Provide accurate and detailed information regarding directions, load information, pick-up/delivery times and other special load related information.
Accurately input load and driver related information into the system.
May assist in planning loads for drivers on dedicated accounts.
What We're Looking For:
Education
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience required.
Equivalent years of experience are defined as one year of professional experience for each year of college requested.
Experience
0 - 2 years' experience in dispatching drivers and/or high volume/pressure environment required.
Experience supervising remote employees with the ability to leverage available technology highly preferred.
Demonstrates a basic knowledge of U.S. geography and the calculation of transit times across multiple U.S. time zones. (Example:
Ability to effectively calculate the estimated arrival time within a 30-minute window of a driver traveling a set number of miles crossing multiple time zones; factoring in hours-of-service regulations as defined by the Department of Transportation).
Comprehensive knowledge of regulations impacting daily operations (e.g. DOT - national and state) preferred.
Skills/Certifications
Proficient communication skills and common courtesy required; ability to exchange information effectively in a concise and logical way and be sensitive to audience diversity.
Patience dealing with diverse populations and effective persuasion skills via various forms of communication outlets (e.g. phone, messaging, etc.)
Intermediate computer skills required; experience with Microsoft Office (e.g. Outlook, Excel, and Word), Internet and applicable company specific applications.
Ability to perform autonomously and multitask in a fast paced, high-pressure environment and utilize effective problem solving and innovative thinking skills.
