Version: Description of Position: The school nurse supports student success by providing health care through assessment, intervention, and follow-up for all children within the school setting. The school nurse addresses the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and supports their achievement in the learning process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disabilities and the early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse promotes and protects the health status of students and staff through functions in all areas of Coordinated School Health.

HEALTH SERVICES
Conduct focused nursing assessments that contribute to the RN's comprehensive assessment as outlined below

Assist the RN in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care
Obtain a health history
Screen and evaluate vision, hearing, dental and others as directed
Observe students as required for development and health patterns/concerns
Participate in school registration process to procure parental consent and health insurance information

Coordinate with the RN in the development and implementation of health plans and procedures

Maintain a confidential cumulative health record for each student
Interpret the health status of students to parents and school personnel
Initiate and follow referrals for intervention and/or remediation
Plan and implement health management protocols and modification of school programs and environment
Obtain, review and maintain school health plans and emergency action plans
Review immunization records and maintain immunization reports
Participate in development of Individualized Health Plan development
Maintain student accident and staff injury reports

Provide direct nursing intervention

Perform nursing procedures and activities for which the LPN has the necessary degree of knowledge, skill and judgment

Have a thorough understanding of airway management, and maintain an ongoing assessment of the patient's respiratory function.
Provides routine trach care and suctioning, maintains student airway and ensures cleanliness of tracheostomy site.
Responsible for tasks related to G-Tube care, not limited to: administration of medication, assessment of patency, flushing and related skin care.
Monitoring, assessment and care of the student with seizures.
Provide continuous monitoring and care of medical and health related needs.
Administer appropriate level of first aid for illness and injury, including CPR
Administer/supervise medication and monitor the effects
Provide individual health counseling concerning high-risk behaviors
Perform skilled nursing functions

HEALTH EDUCATION
Provide health education for students, staff and parents

Coordinate and participate in student support groups and activities
Serve as a resource person in health education
Teach health topics as outlined in the Mississippi Comprehensive Health Framework which will include but not be limited to tobacco, alcohol and substance abuse prevention

Participate in health curriculum planning and evaluation

HEALTHY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

Recommend provisions for a safe, healthy school environment
Serve on school committees to develop and implement safety programs
Promote and assist in control of communicable diseases
Ensure that each student complies with the immunization requirements of the State of Mississippi
Confirm that students have medical emergency cards on file
Participate in wellness projects

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Promote healthy physical education, sports policies and practices
Serve as a health resource to the physical education staff

NUTRITION SERVICES

Support healthy food service programs
Serve as a health resource to school food service staff

COUNSELING, PSYCHOLOGICAL & SOCIAL SERVICES

Provide crisis intervention for emotional/physical disturbances
Counsel students as needed

HEALTH PROMOTION FOR STAFF

Screen and counsel school employees as needed

FAMILY/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Work with agencies and civic clubs in providing assistance to children
Make home visits as necessary
Coordinate and manage School Health Index and develop and maintain School Health Council

PERFORM OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED BY THE RN/SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Possess a valid Mississippi Nursing License (LPN)
Competency in tracheostomy care
Competency in g-tube care
Competency in seizure care
Ability to pick up, lift, transfer student safely
Possess a minimum of three years of work experience in the health care area
Possess good verbal and written communication skills
Possess organizational and time management skills, and the ability to communicate well with children, parents, school faculty and administration
Possess the ability to work independently according to all nursing practice standards
Pass a criminal background and child abuse registry check
High level of interpersonal skills and ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations and documentation
