Job Summary

The Registered Nurse - Float Pool will provide nursing care to a wide variety of patients within SCRMC. During every shift, the Registered Nurse - Float Pool will be a member of a nursing team that provides direct nursing care to a specific unit within the hospital. It is quite conceivable that a Registered Nurse - Float Pool may start their shift in one unit and then, based on a change in census and acuity, be transferred or moved to a different unit to meet operational requirements. However, it is possible that a Registered Nurse - Float Pool may spend extended periods of time in one nursing unit to help balance off long-term absences (i.e. illness, holidays, maternity leave, etc.). While working within a nursing unit, the Registered Nurse - Float Pool acts as a patient advocate and facilitates communication between the patient, family and other health care professionals. This will result in an approach to planning, organizing, teaching and relationship development that will best meet the needs of the patient.

Based on patient census and acuity throughout SCRMC Hospital, the incumbent may be required to provide standardized nursing care to any and/or all of the nursing units within the scope of a RN's practice.

+ Maintains professional and technical knowledge and pursues professional growth opportunities

+ Supervises and supports the LPN, Nursing Assistant, Nurse Tech, Behavior Health Techs and students

+ Serves as a positive role model and in the preceptor role for new staff and students

+ Keeping access to protected health information secure and confidential

+ Collaborates with physicians and a multidisciplinary team to address patient needs

+ Appropriately seeks help or guidance from supervisor or other resource people

+ Adapts to change and prioritizes work

+ Demonstrates reliable attendance, reports on time and is ready to work at beginning of shift

+ Completes assigned duties, willingly accepts assignments and assists others to complete work on time

+ Willing to support a unit's staffing needs by occasionally adjusting schedules, staying late or working extra

+ Establishes a safe, compassionate, caring environment for patients and their families

+ Establishes a safe, supportive work environment that promotes teamwork

Core Duties:

+ Coordinates patient care by scheduling, consulting and organizing patient activities

+ Performs admission and ongoing patient assessment and responds appropriately to findings

+ Establishes a Plan of Care for each patient to address acute physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

+ Promotes patient engagement by considering specific needs, values and preferences

+ Establishes care goals, teaches patient/family about health conditions, medications, and self-care skills

+ Develops discharge plan individualized for patient/ family needs that prevents hospital readmissions

+ Accurately and completely documents assessments and nursing care in the patient's medical record

+ Promotes continuity of care by reporting activities, incidences, and changing patient needs to the next caregiver

+ Demonstrates infection prevention behaviors, consistent handwashing and use of appropriate PPE's

+ Adheres to safe medication administration while preparing, administering, documenting and monitoring meds

+ Recognizes safety risk and implements prevention plans for falls, skin breakdown and injury

+ Contributes to the department's performance improvement activities

+ Demonstrates competency in performance of clinical skills

Essential Skill Competencies:

+ Body system assessment

+ Phlebotomy

+ Establish IV access

+ CPR or ACLS Certification

+ Safe blood administration

+ Medication monitoring

+ Preventive skin care

+ Chest tube care

+ Aseptic wound care/ dressing change

+ Foley catheter insertion/care

+ Advanced skills specific to individual units will be monitored for competency during orientation.

+ Use of Beds

+ A. Exposure Classifications: High exposure risk

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required Qualifications:

Current Registered Nurse License in MS or Compact License, BLS certification, ACLS certification
