The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is the veterinarian's primary medical support. They aid veterinarians in achieving greater efficiency by assisting in all medical procedures and exams, and relieving veterinarians of technical work and administrative detail. They have a significant role in communicating with and educating clients about their pets.

Education

• AAS in Veterinary Technology or Veterinary Nursing

• Currently a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in good standing with the state of Missouri

• Provides compassionate care to clients and patients.
• Assists the veterinarian with all aspects of patient care as required by the veterinarian or as assigned by the lead RVT in all areas of the hospital; Treatment, Exam Rooms, and Front Desk.
• Assists veterinarians with in-patient care and daily treatments.
• Can assist the veterinarian with medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepares the patients for surgery, administers anesthesia and monitors patients during surgery and recovery.
• Can give SQ, IM, and IV injections.
• Will review medical records for past medical/vaccine history.
• Gather patient history from the clients. Records history in the medical record and reports history to the appropriate veterinarian.
• Understands how to calculate drug dosages, fluid rates, oxygen flow rates and concentrations for constant rate infusions.
• Understands the dosages, usages, and potential side effects of commonly used prescription medications and can explain them to clients.
• Can perform regional nerve blocks.
• Understands all common vaccinations and vaccination protocols and can explain them to clients.
• Can perform physical assessments of patients and can document and report findings to the attending veterinarian.
• Can anesthetize, intubate, and monitor patients while under anesthesia. Maintains detailed records of anesthetic events.
• Can safely recover patients from anesthetic events, and monitor them throughout the recovery period.
• Knows how to safely operate gas anesthesia machines.
• Can maintain gas anesthesia machines and know how to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
• Knows how to use anesthetic monitors; understands normal patient values and limitations of anesthetic monitoring equipment; knows how to maintain and clean anesthetic monitoring equipment and knows how to troubleshoot problems as they arise.
• Can perform venipuncture of jugular, cephalic, and saphenous veins.
• Can keep accurate medical records. Records client communications, lab results, and physical assessments in a timely manner
• Can effectively restrain pets, even when large or difficult.
• Can place cephalic and saphenous intravenous catheters, and understands how to maintain and care for intravenous catheters. Understands the use and care if IV pumps.
• Can effectively triage patients; able to categorize patients as critical, urgent, non-urgent, or stable.
• Can perform emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, oxygen therapy, opening airways, intubation, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) according to the hospital protocols and RECOVER guidelines.
• Can place bandages.
• Knows common disease states and can alert veterinarians when changes occur or when concerns with hospital patients arise.
• Can maintain narcotic/controlled drug logs according to DEA guidelines.

• Can effectively position for and obtain diagnostic quality radiographs.
• Can prepare patients and set-up machines for ultrasound procedures.
• Can send ultrasound videos, digital radiographs, and ECGs to specialists for consultation as requested by the attending veterinarian.
• Can collect samples for and perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, SNAP tests, urinalysis, skin scrapings, ear cytologies, and preparation of bacterial culture mediums, fungal cultures.
• Can perform cystocentesis.
• Can operate and clean laboratory equipment; serum chemistry analyzer, hematology analyzer, urinalysis dipstick reader, SediVue, microscope, Idexx SNAP Pro.
• Can prepare samples for pick up or shipment to reference laboratories in a timely manner.

• Can properly care for all surgical materials, keeps the operating room stocks and prepared for surgery.
• Can prepare surgical packs; understands how to wrap and autoclave surgical packs.
• Prepares, stocks, and maintains asepsis in the exam rooms, treatment area, and operating room.
• Understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean and organize as part of the normal job duties.

• Can prepare client invoices for services performed.
• Can accurately handle payment transactions.
• Can build treatment plans upon the request of a veterinarian.
• Can accurately and empathetically communicate treatment plans to clients.
• Can prepare prescriptions and non-prescription medications to be dispensed to include counting tablets, entering prescription information into the computer, generating prescription labels and notifying clients by telephone when prescriptions are ready for pickup.
• Can admit patients following hospital policy and veterinarian's written orders.
• Can discharge patients based on veterinarian's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state.
• Can perform follow up phone calls for post-op or recently discharged patients and identify signs of potential complications or need for additional assessment or treatment.
