Summary:
Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Manager RN position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing of the operations and staff of the respective department. This position has 24 hour responsibility and accountability for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care to ensure optimal patient health outcomes within MyMichigan Medical Centers- Alma and Clare. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.
The Manager RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice.
The Manager RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence-based practice and research findings. Has responsibility for the Surgical Departments (the Operating Room, PACU, Day Surgery, Pre-Admission Testing, and Sterile Processing). Is competent to assure provision of effective, high quality patient care, which includes coordinating clinical nursing practice and patient care delivery, managing surgery and personnel schedule, development of personnel, and compliance with regulatory and professional standards. This position has local level responsibility to oversee anesthesia scheduling and regulatory compliance to ensure optimal patient health outcomes. This position also works collaboratively with the System Director of Anesthesia to evaluate job performance and handle matters related to human resources.
Responsibilities:
(40%)* Coordination of Operating Room, PACU, Day Surgery, Pre-Admission Testing, and Sterile Processing. Assists with establishing budgets and works within that budget. Leads the department and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to ensure quality care and positive patient experience by ensuring evidence based best practices are provided.
(20%)* Directs patient activity within the area of responsibility. Provides on going evaluation of patient status and suggests changes in treatment program to physicians involved as necessary. Work with supervisors to makes changes in staffing assignments as level of activity changes.
(20%)* Responsible for the hiring, continued development, disciplining, counseling and discharging employees within the area according to medical center policy.
(20%)* Takes an active part in nursing management meetings. Takes an active part in monitoring, assessing, and developing plans to meet or exceed quality metrics. Serves on nursing service committees as appointed by the Director.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establishes and implements policies and procedures for the area.
Develops standards of care for unit.
Maintains quality nursing care plans.
Identifies needs, plans, develops and implements programs for orientation, staff development and on going employee education.
Works with physicians and non nursing department personnel in planning coordinated patient care.
Maintains open lines of communication by meeting regularly with nurse managers, shift administrators and holding regular area staff meetings.
Meets with members of medical staff when appropriate to resolve problems and maintain open communication.
Follows lines of authority, responsibility and communication within designated area, nursing service and other departments.
Participates in direct patient care when needed and appropriate.
Maintains quality assurance within the area of responsibility and possesses a high degree of clinical expertise in that area.
Remains available for staff consultations and recommends changes when appropriate.
Plans and prepares the annual operating/capital budget for the unit.
Prepares planning proposals, justifications for projects, staffing, capitol development and other financial reports as required by the unit.
Takes an active role in the regular nursing management meetings to influence the direction of nursing service.
Actively leads/participates in appropriate meetings.
Plans and develops new programs and facility renovation as appropriate.
Participates on or leads nursing service committees as appointed by senior management.
Participates on medical staff committees as appropriate.
Assures compliance with standards such as Joint Commission, MDPH, AORN, and APIC.
Participates in Performance Improvement activities, accreditation readiness, and accreditation surveys.
Plans, develops, implements and evaluates educational programs for orientation, staff development, and continued growth of all employees within the department.
Counsels staff as needed.
Responsible for maintaining lines of communication with peers, subordinates, and superiors.
Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing management and other departmental personnel in planning for coordinated services to the patient.
Responsible for observance of standard universal precautions for staff.
Responsible for maintenance of quality monitors in the OR with strict observance of medical and surgical sepsis.
Responsible for documentation and monitoring such as temperature logs, humidity logs, and crash cart checks.
Insures that hospital policies are followed regarding completion of history and physical, lab work, consents, consultations and assistants.
Schedules surgeries and procedures according to surgeon and pain specialist designated privileges.
Provides administration with monthly statistics of census, PI activities, chart review activities, and meeting minutes.
Responds appropriately to variances.
Responsible for monitoring and scheduling surgery, monitoring distribution of the surgery schedule.
Responsible for scheduling personnel, including daily and call schedules for all levels of staff.
Will be responsible to fill in as OR staff member, and take call as needed.
Responsible for reviewing, updating, and implementing policies and procedures in collaboration with Radiology/Cardiology Manager, Administration and/or Infection Control Manager in accordance with current standards.
Conducts and maintains annual evaluations.
Conducts staff competency reviews.
Conducts staff meetings and in services and maintains documentation of competency reviews and meeting attendance.
