The Prince George's County Department of Permitting, Inspections, & Enforcementis currently seeking qualified applicants to fill an Engineering Technician III position, grade A20, in the Building Plan Review Division.

About the Position:

This is lead para-professional engineering and administrative work in the Plan Screening and Distribution Unit that assists the Engineer Technician V and Engineer Technician IV, with managing plans administration including monitoring the plan review system in conjunction with processing and issuing permits utilizing various electronic permitting and plans review systems. Work is performed that affords independent judgment and technical evaluation under the general supervision of the Engineer Technician V, Engineering Technician IV and/or the Associate Director for the Division or designee. The incumbent performs work diligently to complete tasks and duties as assigned to meet agency needs. The incumbent will also be responsible for performing a variety of clerical and/or administrative duties relative to the processing of applications through issuance of various County permits. The incumbent is required to maintain current knowledge of permit processing procedures, use technical permitting and plans administration skills and assist in training staff assigned to the Unit. All tasks listed in the position description must be performed as required by the Engineering Technician V, Engineering Technician IV and/or Associate Director.
About The Agency:
The Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) is responsible for coordinating and enforcing standards that control what goes on before, during, and after construction. Staff from nine agencies, who work cooperatively on permit processing, business licensing, plan review, inspection and enforcement comprise Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement. The Mission of the Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement is to promote economic development in Prince George's County and protect the safety of County residents, businesses, and visitors through efficient permitting, inspection and licensing services to ensure compliance with established building, zoning and property standards codes.

Examples of Work

Manage multiple building and Use & Occupancy project submissions through timely screening and distribution of plans for revies;
Act as a knowledgeable technical liaison to contractors, architects, engineers, consultants, County review agencies and others, regarding plans compliance requirements and review statuses;
Ensure that building projects are monitored, coordinated and tracked with prompt communications to internal/external customers;
Assist engineers in the preparation, fee calculation and review of plans and documents for engineering projects in order to assure all are in full compliance with Codes and County policies;
Conduct quality checks of online applications and electronic plans review tasks for projects;
Assist supervisor in providing training to staff assigned to the Unit;
Use project management skills to maintain quality control according to code and policy requirements;
Act as team lead to direct and discuss assignments with staff while using automated equipment to complete assignments.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or an equivalent GED, supplemented by
Four (4) years of experience in processing and issuing permits in the applicable area assigned.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be consideredPreferred Qualifications:

Thorough knowledge of the practices, procedures and methods used in processing permits and plans administration in the related area assigned.
Ability to lead the work of subordinate level personnel.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to deal courteously and effectively with others.
Experience coordinating with other permitting agencies to acquire or issue permits.
Experience with electronic permitting systems.
Experience with database tools, creating and executing reports.
