SRNL's Materials Science and Disposition group is seeking a qualified Scientist/Engineer to grow the laboratory's DOE-Nuclear Energy (NE-8), DOE-EM Technology Development (TD), and SRS portfolios in the areas of Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) Storage, the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) SNF drying pilot, disposition technologies, and aging management programs.
This person will work on teams to propose, define, and execute the scope of technical programs for the nuclear materials processing/treatment for stabilization for extended storage/disposition of SNF and nuclear materials.
Successful candidates would have a degree in a materials related field, demonstrated ability to design and conduct research to leverage new technologies, materials, and phenomena, and demonstrated ability to apply and interpret scientific or engineering laws and theories to solve general problems.
The role will also involve programmatic management and interface with local and HQ-stationed DOE customers.
While NE/SNF experience is preferred, someone with tangential nuclear or materials storage experience can increase their technical depth while in the role.
Similarly, programmatic experience is preferred but the opportunity is also there for someone who has lead skills and is looking to grow their program management skills.
Field of Study/Capabilities include but not limited to nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science/engineering, physics and related science or engineering disciplines.
Responsibilities
In the role, the candidate will work on interdisciplinary teams to propose and define the scope of technical programs and develop effective and efficient solutions to challenging problems, including development of proposals and funding opportunities for first-of-kind concepts for materials system solutions for:
• Nuclear materials processing/treatment for stabilization for extended storage/disposition of SNF and nuclear materials, including evaluation of corrosion monitoring strategies
• Advanced materials for applications in mechanical/chemical systems
Thorough understanding of their discipline and a rudimentary understanding of other disciplines.
Diagnoses issues using a systematic and methods approach.
Presents results of research to appropriate scientific and business audiences and may participate in commercialization of results.
Communicates using persuasion and authority.
Ability to work with multi-discipline teams to solve these problems will be crucial to the candidate and SRNL's success.
Create groups outside the immediate team to tackle scientific problems.
Does not manage employees but may mentor and/or train junior or new staff members.
Conducts and gathers research to further knowledge in a particular area.
Arrives at conclusion based on previous experiences and good judgment.
Works safely with particular attention to quality.
Complies with all policies and standards.
