Job Summary

The Nurse Extern is accountable for providing nursing assistance and performing basic nursing procedures to patients within an assigned nursing department, under the supervision, guidance and direction of an RN.

The Nurse Extern will also provide a safe and dignified environment for residents in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the facility.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform tasks/acts that are routinely part of any nursing assistant's job description. Following verification of skills competency to perform specific tasks/acts, the nurse extern shall perform the following tasks/acts as determined by his/her nursing supervisor:

Provide personal care including bath, shampoo, shave, back rub, position changes, makes beds, prepares patients for meals, feeds patients and passes ice water.
Answer call lights and bells promptly to determine and meet patient needs.
Collect specimens, stool, urine, sputum, etc.
Collect food and hydration input and urine and bowel output and record appropriately.
Take vital signs.
Obtain and record pertinent patient information per facility policy.
Assist with and/or feed patients, provides between meal nourishments, fresh drinking water, and encourage fluids when indicated.
Assist in progressive ambulation of patients by wheelchair, stretcher, and bed.
Administer enemas, douches, and document appropriately.
Apply ace bandages and elastic stockings and sequential compression devices.
Observe isolation technique and give direct care to patients in isolation.
Assist in ostomy care and education.
Apply orthopedic appliances and/or assistive devices as ordered by physician.
Other tasks as directed by his/her supervising RN.

Physical Demands and Abilities

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Must be a minimum of 17 years of age.
Must frequently lift or move residents and objects weighing over 100 pounds. This is an essential aspect of the job which will be performed at least 20 times per day.
Frequent pushing or pulling of wheelchairs or beds weighing in excess of 200 pounds. This is an aspect of the job which will be performed at least 20 times per day.
Frequent bending and stopping to assist with dressing, tying shoes, bathing residents.
Frequent reaching and stretching across beds and patients to change sheets, linens, clothes. The required reach can be between 1 and 4 feet.
Ability to balance while reaching and stretching to obtain items off shelves or across beds.
Finger and hand dexterity required.
Visual and hearing acuity essential.
Is subject to walking on wet surfaces, moving heated equipment, breathing foul or rank odors, etc. throughout the shift.
Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.
Must be able to assist with the evacuation of residents.
Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times hostile people within the facility.
Frequently works in a well-lit or dimly-lit, tempered room.

Other Requirements

May be required to attend activities outside the facility to stay abreast of new developments, best practices, and statutory and regulatory changes.
May be required to work holidays
Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
Pursuant to the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988, all employees must remain drug free and alcohol free when reporting to work, while at work and while engaged in any work related activities.
Comply with all Healthcare Act rules and regulations and any related laws and regulations.
