POSITION GENERAL SUMMARY:

Facilitates Victim-Witness Program coordination by providing assistance to victims and witnesses of crime by providing crisis intervention, court support, social service referrals, community education, information on the criminal justice process, case status notification, and training.

Essential Functions

Each Victim-Witness Coordinator who occupies this position will be assigned to one of the two statements listed just below:

+ Provides assistance relating to support, guidance, and short-term crisis intervention to survivors, victims and witnesses of homicide, child sexual and physical assault, rape and domestic violence; or crimes involving violence or special circumstances; or

+ Provides assistance relating to support, guidance, and short-term crisis intervention to domestic violence victims, and other victims as directed.

Each Victim-Witness Coordinator who occupies this position will perform all of the functions listed below:

+ Acts as an advocate for victims ensuring that their needs are addressed within the criminal justice system and community;

+ Maintains a register of referral agencies and refers victims to appropriate community resources;

+ Makes referrals for medical, psychological, legal, financial, shelter and employment services;

+ Keeps abreast of court calendars, status of cases, maintains records, statistical data and files relevant to assigned cases;

+ Provides information relating to case status and disposition;

+ Assists prosecutors and law enforcement officials with interviews with victims and witnesses by providing support to victims;

+ Coordinates court appearances and escorts victims to court to provide support; assists with property return; assists with the filing of Victim's Compensation Applications. Assists in coordinating program operations with other segments of the law enforcement/criminal justice system to ensure effectiveness of operations;

+ Maintains liaison with programs operated by other agencies to provide technical assistance and service coordination; and

+ Gathers statistical data relevant to the Victim-Witness Program.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

+ Assists in educational presentations to law enforcement, schools, and other criminal justice agencies and community organizations;

+ Performs related duties as required.

Job Requirements

+ Bachelors Degree from an accredited university in Psychology, Sociology or related field is required;

+ Two (2) years of work experience in crisis intervention capacity;

+ Knowledge of the objectives of victim-witness programs;

+ Knowledge of the processes involved in the Criminal Justice System;

+ Knowledge of the principles and practices of applied sociology and psychology;

+ Knowledge of data collection and public relations contact techniques;

+ Ability to establish and maintain rapport with individuals in crisis and impacted by crime, including small children;

+ Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, members of other agencies and the public;

+ Ability to understand and follow verbal and written direction;

+ Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;

+ Ability to provide direct support to victims as needed;

+ Ability to be self-directed and creative in tracking and solving problems;

+ Ability to think well and respond quickly in a crisis;

+ Ability to maintain professional boundaries;

+ Ability to maintain confidentiality.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

+ The incumbent is subject to a criminal records check and fingerprinting;

+ This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing;

+ Must adherence to the Code of Ethics for the legal profession;

+ The incumbent will work closely with law enforcement and court personnel;

+ May respond to hospitals, home or crime scenes to assist detectives with victims during the evening hours and or weekends in accordance with on-call policy;

+ May be required to take on-call shifts with the Ada County Sheriffs Office Victim Witness Program.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

+ Work is performed primarily in an office environment and the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;

+ May be required to lift up to 20 lbs. ;

+ Requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits the employee to function in a general office environment to accomplish tasks.
