University of Iowa Healthcare, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician Supervisor to join our team.

The Pharmacy Technician Supervisor serves a member of the Pharmacy management team. Under general supervision of the Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, coordinates and supervises the personnel and technical services in the pediatric acute care pharmacies, including central and perioperative pharmacy.

Position Responsibilities

Human resource management of pharmacy technicians, trainees, students, and senior technicians, including:

Interviewing and hiring of new employees.
Employee supervision, evaluation, counseling, and disciplinary action.
Prepare and deliver performance feedback and reviews.
Scheduling and assignment of work proactively and in the moment.
Assure compliance with University, State and Federal safety codes and regulations.
Prepare content for and facilitate technician meetings and operations huddles.
Facilitate employee orientation, training, and competency programs.
Assist with preparing and updating training and orientation materials.
Assist with training and orientation of new staff.
Audit and evaluate training effectiveness and modify training schedules as appropriate.
Prepare, administer, and monitor competencies, including those related to sterile, non-sterile, and hazardous compounding for all staff, including pharmacists.
Supervise the performance of the technical aspects of drug preparation and dispensing and ascertain that proper established procedures are followed.
Ensure that staff understand their role in patient medication safety and actively search for methods to improve medication safety aspects of workflow.
Provide oversight of pharmacy technician travelers, in alignment with employed technicians.

Administrative duties, to include:

Evaluation of the quality and quantity of pharmacy services according to established procedures and standards.
Prepare procedures, analyses, workload data, and budget reports as requested.
Participate in management meetings and decisions relating to new services or procedures, employee relations, and quality improvement initiatives.
Provide estimates of resources necessary to maintain and initiate services including staffing, equipment, and supplies.
Initiate and prepare forms and records including payroll records, inventory records, and requisitions.
Review and maintain pharmacy documentation, following up on any variances, completing and filing as appropriate.

Operational coordination and oversight, to include:

Monitor operation of the clean room, automated compounding equipment, refrigerators, freezers, and incubators in central and decentral pharmacy locations. Perform adjustments or initiate request for repairs or replacement as needed.
Assist Pharmacist Manager in understanding, implementing, and enforcing current USP and Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners rules and regulations related to the production of sterile, non-sterile, and hazardous products.
Review and respond to safety events.

Assist with supply chain maintenance and response to drug shortages:

Assure adequate supplies of medications, fluids, and other supplies available for established needs, and medications are properly stored.
C onduct inventory counts as assigned.
C ommunicate drug shortage information with staff.
Coordinate supply chain needs with other pharmacy areas as needed.
F acilitate shortage mitigation efforts, including implementing new compounding procedures.
Optimize decentralized inventory levels for medications in short supply.

Maintain and enhance personal competence, including:

Attend (and communicate via in-service education) seminars, conferences and institutes designed to increase personal knowledge of communication techniques, employee relations, and management.
Maintain personal competency and performs all duties and responsibilities of Pharmacy Technician.
Demonstrate and encourage staff to achieve department goals and objectives.
Staff a minimum of 10% based on workload needs. Minimum staffing will include 2 weekend shifts (day, evening, overnight) and 2 weekday shifts (day, evening, overnight) every 8 weeks.

Perform other duties as assigned. QualificationsEducation Requirements

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
S uccessful completion of the pharmacy technician certification exam within twelve months of the start of employment.

Experience Requirements

M inimum of 3 years' experience in supervisory, pharmacy or technical work setting.
Job related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence is required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Excellent interpersonal skills, creating positive working relationships with team members including healthcare providers, vendors and pharmacy staff.

Desired Qualifications

Job-related experience in a hospital setting.
A Master of Science in healthcare/management related advanced degree such as an MHA, MPH or MBA.
Experience with automation/technology, human resources management, project management and Epic electronic health record.
Ability to effectively prioritize and keep multiple initiatives moving forward 70-7305simultaneously.
