Basic Life Support Description:
The Surgical Technologist operates under the direction of a registered professional nurse.
Assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care.
Exhibits knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within moderate to high acuity surgical cases.
Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other healthcare team members.
Demonstrates an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases.
Formulates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases.
Engages in discussion about surgical plans with other healthcare team members.
Capable of troubleshooting instruments and equipment.
Anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures.
Ability to mentor, precept, or train in various modalities.
Participates in performance improvement initiatives.
Prepares the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment.
Maintains the sterile field and addresses patient safety concerns.
Gathers required instruments and supplies and serves as a surgical assistant as needed.
Assists with inventory, ordering, and stocking operating rooms.
Ensures compliance with Joint Commission standards.
Call or late coverage may be required based on the facility's needs.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Possesses knowledge, skill, and ability of procedures performed.
Anticipates the needs of the surgical team.
Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
Assists with room setup and opening of sterile supplies.
Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications.
Performs appropriate surgical counts with circulator.
Actively participates in procedure pause/time-out.
Scrubs, gowns, and gloves the surgical team.
Assists in draping sterile fields.
Passes instruments to the surgeon during procedures.
Maintains an organized back table and operative field.
Anticipates and offers surgeon suggestions throughout procedures.
Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures.
Prepares sterile dressings.
Participates in post-procedure pause and specimen handling.
Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
Informs SPD of critical need instruments.
Applies principles of asepsis to prevent infection and ensure safety.
Prepares case carts according to procedures and preference cards.
Assists clinical coordinator with preparation for future cases.
Observes patient condition and reports changes to the physician and nurse.
Plans for the next steps in procedures and adapts to emergencies.
Prepares the operating room and other areas for receiving patients.
Maintains financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment.
Patient Care Responsibilities:
Provides patient-centered care consistent with specific characteristics.
Verifies procedures with patients and conducts relief bedside shift report.
Practices using current clinical standards under nursing supervision.
