The Berkeley Lab's Facilities Division seeks an Electrical Systems Engineer to support critical infrastructure.
This role involves managing low voltage ( What You Will Do:
Primary electrical engineer for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory campus, ensuring reliability of electrical equipment.
Manages equipment and Preventive Maintenance Improvement Program, reviews reports, identifies issues, recommends improvements, optimizes PM frequencies, and develops strategies for new equipment.
Identifies and tracks risks and vulnerabilities to improve safety, reliability, and sustainability.
Performs trending to identify and address failing equipment.
Develops projects and solutions to mitigate risks.
Coordinates with Facilities Operations and Maintenance to prioritize and schedule work.
Maintains equipment metrics, communicates KPIs, and leads quarterly meetings to review priorities and strategies.
Provides daily support for Electrical Systems, advises on troubleshooting, conducts failure investigations, and proposes reliability improvements.
Interacts with CMMS for maintenance tracking, compliance, and asset history, providing guidance for complex repairs.
Supports outages, equipment overhauls, and repairs.
Maintains up-to-date electrical system records, drawings, and panel schedules.
Reviews LOTO permits and conducts Arc Flash calculations.
Manages Electrical Specifications, soliciting feedback and ensuring periodic updates.
What is Required:
Level 3:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering or related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of relevant electrical engineering experience; or three (3) years of relevant experience and a Master's degree or equivalent 9 years of combined education/related professional experience.
Experience with electrical system troubleshooting, testing and preventive maintenance programs, and risk assessments.
Experience conducting electrical engineering studies of low and medium voltage equipment including power system analysis involving short circuit, voltage drop, power factor, protective device coordination, and Arc Flash analysis by using SKM.
Experienced in computer-based power system modeling with one of the following software packages (SKM, Easy Power, ETAP).
Demonstrated experience in the application of electrical codes, regulations and standards (i.e.
NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 70B, NFPA 70E, ANSI/IEEE, NETA MTS, NETA ATS).
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written as well as collaboration skills necessary to effectively present and advise line management and science program customers.
Proven ability to work effectively on multiple projects with varying priorities while meeting tight deadlines.
Ability to work in a diverse work environment within all levels of an organization.
Level 4 (in addition to the above):
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering or related discipline and a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant electrical engineering experience; or six (6) years of relevant experience and a Master's degree or 12 years of educational/equivalent experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Knowledgeable in Schneider Electric Power Monitoring Expert system and ION meters.
Experienced in protection, control, automation, and SCADA for Medium and High Voltage (12.47kV and 115kV) systems.
Electrical design expertise in medium and low voltage power systems.
Advanced understanding of electrical construction methods and selection of electrical equipment, including medium/low voltage switchgear.
Proficient in AutoCAD.
Registered professional engineer in the State of California.
Notes:
This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
The Electrical Systems Engineer 3 is expected to pay $153,600- $169,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $115,800 - $195,384 annually for the job classification of G31.3.
The Electrical Systems Engineer 4 is expected to pay $178,200 - $215,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $138,984 - $234,528 annually for the job classification of G31.4.
Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
Salary offers are determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and experience.
