Job Summary

The MSP Director plans, organizes, and directs the overall operation of the MSP and Critical Care Units. Directs and supervises nursing staff in the provision of nursing care and assures the availability of human and fiscal resources which facilitate care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, organize and direct MSP and Critical Care Unit operations and ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.

• Make daily rounds in assigned areas to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere.

• Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment and supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care and create an optimum physical environment.

• Initiate, interpret and enforce proper services and procedures within assigned areas and maintain and interpret hospital policies and procedures.

• Provides managerial leadership to assure an optimal functioning nursing unit and has 24-hour responsibility for the unit. Serves as role model and leader both professionally and clinically at all times.

• Supports hospital decisions, mission and values at all times.

• Serves as resource to staff, interpreting philosophy, goals, standards, policies and procedures.

• Collaborates with other nursing leaders in planning, policy formation and decision making for the Patient Services Division.

• Promotes a high level of quality patient care to meet patient needs and realistic expectations.

• Develops, implements, continuously monitors and provides changes for improvement to unit-based Performance Improvement Programs that coordinate with the overall nursing and hospital PI program.

• Develops annual operating, capital and FTE budgets for management of expense to revenue ratios within established guidelines. Maintains resources within budget.

• Provides appropriate staff to meet patient, family and unit needs safely.

• Provides training, education and professional development opportunities for nursing staff to ensure clinical competence and to promote job satisfaction.

• Write departmental policy and procedure manuals and updates as required.

• Promotes a supportive environment in which employees are encouraged to solve problems and address customer issues.

• Practices and behaves in a professional, safe and ethical manner at all times.

• Maintains friendly and courteous interpersonal communication skills and a positive service attitude.

• Participates in performance improvement and educational activities. Completes all CEU's as required by respective licensure. If licensed, maintains an active and current license.

• Works willingly and accepts assignments as given.

• Attends all mandatory meetings and programs.

• Participates in opportunities that enhance personal and professional growth.

• Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.

• Complies with the Corporate Compliance Policy and all laws, regulations, and Standards of Conduct relating to the position and agrees to report any suspected violations of law or Standards of Conduct.

• Complies with all applicable state and federal regulations and JCAHO standards.

• Maintains a safe work environment using safe work practices, utilizing standard precautions and complying with hazardous waste procedures at all times as described in St. Anthony's Safety Manual.

• Maintains the confidentiality of patient, resident, employee and organizational information.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the MSP and CCU departments. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

• Associate's degree (A. A. ) or graduate of a school of nursing. BSN preferred.

• Minimum of three years Med/Surg/Peds and/or CCU clinical experience.

• Management experience preferred.

Position Requirements, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• Graduate of an accredited school for professional nursing.

• Currently licensed to practice professional nursing in the State of Iowa.

• BLS upon hire

• MOAB training and ACLS within six months of employment.

• Strong leadership skills.

• Experience with successfully managing budgets.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Demonstrated performance excellence and leadership qualities.

• Excellent organization, interpersonal, and customer service skills.

• Ability to work independently, make decisions, meet deadlines, and solve problems; working under a moderate to high degree of pressure.

• Experience with hospital-based computer system.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers, patients, families and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; talk and hear; and use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk and sit. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Computer work is frequent.
