Clinical Program Coordinator RN/Registered Nurse - EMS/BSP

All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children's National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. Children's National supports the development of RN relationships within the community; specifically those relationships associated with the health and well-being of the community at large. Responsible for leading the activities of the Base Station/hospital based personnel who provide consultation for pediatric patients accessing the health system through Emergency Medical Services. Provide continuous accountability for assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating processes for online medical consultation and communication between Children's National and Prehospital systems. Responsible for identification, rectification, and evaluation of clinical process improvement. Evaluate education needs and implement educational strategies for healthcare providers interacting with the EMS system. Collaborate with EMS systems to provide outreach and education to Prehospital providers to improve the care of pediatric patients. Maintain knowledge of best practice in pediatric emergency care and implement strategies to integrate best practice into the clinical setting.

Qualifications:Minimum Education
BSN (Required)
Master's Degree Nursing or Public Health (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
5 years Nursing experience. Minimum of one year recent pediatric experience in a comparable setting with a preference for emergency or transport. Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated nursing leadership experience for example as a charge nurse, educator, preceptor, council chair/member, advancement on the clinical ladder or comparable positions. • Advocate for shared decision making of patients and families in interactions with EMS providers, Medical Control Officers, and other members of the healthcare team

• Maintain clinical expertise in pediatric emergency care and shares/contributes to best practices with Base Station personnel and EMS providers

• Use the nursing process to respond to patient problems and concerns related to Base Station interactions; critically analyzing and integrating subjective and objective data

• Engage opportunities to act in the best interest of the patient/family, advocates for access of patients and families to relevant health services and emergency care

• Ensure development of protocols and guidelines reflect organizational commitment to patient and family-centered care

• Ensure that services provided meet policy requirements and standardization

• Maintain equipment and supplies as needed, promotes safe and effective use

• Ensure regulatory requirements are met and area is in a constant state of readiness

• Keep updated on the application of health informatics systems as it relates to Prehospital care and Base Station activities

• Facilitate internal and external interprofessional groups to review Base Station activities, examine processes, identify areas for improvement, or present Case Study reviews to improve outcomes for pediatric patients

• Ensure time, schedule, and alternate coverage plans to meet both Base Station and personal needs

• Demonstrate ability to work independently and/or with a team managing multiple and conflicting priorities

• Ensure services are delivered in a fiscally-responsible manner while achieving desired patient outcomes

• Direct the flow of communications to ensure consults are adequately managed and the Base Station is running smoothly

• Collaborate with professional staff including MDs, RNs, Communication Specialists, and other personnel in adherence to the state practice act/guidelines and Children's National job descriptions

• Communicate and escalate clinical/administrative issues as appropriate to levels of individuals assigned for resolution

• Participate in the peer review of other staff as assigned

• Participates in/supports Shared Nursing Leadership

• Contributes to the sustainability and advancement of nursing excellence which translates into on-going Magnet designation

• Participates or contributes to internal/external committees, professional organizations, or community activities

• Maintains BLS Provider and PALS certifications

• Attends Base Station course and completes annual protocol updates as required by EMS jurisdictions

• Coordinates with Base Station Medical Director to disseminate updated protocol information to all persons providing medical direction/consultation to EMS providers

• Ensures that all emergent and updated protocols are included in the references for the Base Station including the Medical Control areas and Emergency Communications and Information Center

• Coordinates with Base Station Medical Director to maintain record of personnel who have completed Base Station Course and annual protocol updates for appropriate EMS jurisdictions

• Coordinates with Base Station Medical Director to ensure that online medical direction/consultation provided by the Base Station is timely, appropriate, and consistent with jurisdictional EMS protocols

• Maintains and updates the Base Station Quality Management Plan

• Oversees and manages a database of EMS consults as outlined in the Base Station Quality Management Plan

• Reviews documentation of medical direction/consultation provided to EMS providers

• Completes audio review for a minimum of 3% of EMS Base Station consults

• Collaborates with Base Station Medical Director and other hospital-based Base Station personnel to identify, evaluate, and improve processes, while reducing deviation from guidelines and protocols

• Collaborates with Emergency Medical Services for Children, Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Systems, DC Fire EMS, and/or other outside agencies to identify, evaluate, and improve processes
