First Merchants Bank is seeking a Team Lead, Mortgage Underwriter to join our team! This position will assist our Underwriting Manager in overseeing day-to-day pipeline management and provides expert handling of loan escalations, scenario reviews, and the appraisal review process. In addition, the Underwriting Team Lead actively collaborates on departmental projects and process improvement initiatives, championing our commitment to quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

Pipeline Management:
Ensure efficient workflow by managing the daily underwriting pipeline, focusing on delivering high-quality, timely loan decisions that align with our bank's standards. Assist with initial decision UW, resubmission UW, and adverse second level reviews as needed.
Escalation Handling:
Assist the UW Manager with escalated loan cases, complex scenarios, and appraisal escalations, assisting team members with a supportive and collaborative approach.
Appraisal Review:
provide support and assist in overseeing the appraisal review process, ensuring all evaluations meet regulatory standards and reflect our core value of authenticity.
Project Support and Process Improvement:
Assist with departmental projects, and work closely with cross-functional teams to implement and enhance process improvements. Champion continuous improvement initiatives that align with our values, aiming to optimize efficiency, accuracy, and customer satisfaction.
Team Leadership and Development:
Support and back up the Underwriting Manager by guiding the team, providing mentorship, and contributing to ongoing training initiatives. Model our core values by fostering a team culture that is both collaborative and customer-focused.
Quality and Risk Control:
Assist with and conduct detailed scenario reviews and maintain rigorous standards to uphold compliance and mitigate risk, reinforcing our bank's dedication to authenticity in service. Help review and remedy internal and external audit findings. Ensure UW processes and procedures are documented and aligned with current standards/ process.
Effective Communication:
Engage with underwriting, processing, and sales teams to maintain alignment, provide regular updates, and foster a collaborative work environment.

In order to be successful in this position, we require the following:

High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
Five years of experience in residential mortgage underwriting, including expertise in Conventional, FHA, USDA, VA, Construction, HFA, Affordable Lending, and DPA loan products.
Demonstrated knowledge of appraisal and underwriting processes, mortgage regulations, and risk management best practices.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with high attention to detail.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to leadership.
Relevant certifications in FHA, VA, and USDA.
