The Microbiologist position is part of Laboratory Services at the Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF), Environmental Services Department (ESD), City of San Jose. This position works on-site at the RWF located at 4245 Zanker Road, San Jose, CA 95134. No remote work is available for this position. Typical schedules are 40 hours per week/5 days per week working various shifts between 6:
00 am-6:
00 pm. This position can expect to work occasional weekend and holiday shifts.

Job Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

HAB Detection and Monitoring:

Perform routine and advanced analyses to identify and quantify harmful algal species using microscopic techniques and molecular biology tools.
Analyze environmental samples to detect and enumerate phytoplankton populations, particularly those contributing to HABs.
Chlorophyll analysis

Primer and Probe Design:

Design and validate primers and probes for rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of HAB-associated toxins or species using digital PCR (dPCR) assays.
Optimize molecular detection workflows for improved efficiency and accuracy in field and laboratory settings.

Microscopic Analysis:

Conduct detailed morphological studies of phytoplankton species using microscopy.
Differentiate between harmful and benign algal species based on taxonomy and ecological relevance.

Research and Development:

Develop innovative methodologies for faster, high-throughput detection of HABs and associated toxins.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve sampling strategies, detection technologies, and data interpretation.

Other areas you are expected to contribute to are:

Routine Microbiology work- IDEXX methods, routine wet chemistry

Toxicology work- Whole effluent toxicity

Wet chemistry analysis for weekends and holiday work coverage.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Microbiology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.

Experience:
At least 1-3 years of experience working in an environmental laboratory setting performing microbiological, chemical, and physical analysis.

License:
Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in California.

Other qualifications:
Knowledge of basic laboratory skills, handling and disposing of chemicals, aseptic techniques, Microsoft Office programs, and the ability to operate analytical instruments and software. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight on occasion. Must be able to follow the laboratory safety procedures.
