THE OPPORTUNITY:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Trusts & Estates Counsel in our Corporate Department with at least 8 years of experience.
Seyfarth's Trusts and Estates attorneys possess the broad, in-depth experience necessary to serve a diverse client base, ranging from basic planning for the young professional or entrepreneur, affluent and multi-generation families, family offices, trust companies, international families, not for profit organizations, start-up ventures, middle-market companies and some of the largest multinational corporations in the world.
We provide clients with guidance on key decisions that determine long-term success.
Since Trusts and Estate matters frequently involve aspects of many legal disciplines, our team regularly draws on the resources of Seyfarth's other practice areas such as employee benefits, executive compensation, intellectual property, labor and employment, real estate, environmental and bankruptcy.
In this way, our clients receive full service and attention from our dedicated, focused attorneys specializing in virtually any legal discipline.
THE DAY-TO-DAY:

Seyfarth's Trusts & Estates attorneys specialize in sophisticated planning of trusts and estates, trust and probate administrations, charitable planning, tax and succession planning of family businesses, and trusts and estates litigation.
Our Trusts & Estates attorneys marshal the resources of Seyfarth's full-service platform-including our tax, real estate, corporate and securities, insurance, employee benefits and litigation groups-while providing personal attention that is more typical of an estate-planning boutique.
Beyond a thorough knowledge of applicable federal and state tax laws, our team is adept at navigating complex, sensitive family dynamics, as well as the emotional conflicts that often accompany them.
Our Trusts & Estates attorneys often represent several generations within the same family-a testament to the effectiveness of our counsel, our long-term commitment to clients, and the loyalty these deep relationships engender.
YOU HAVE:
At least 8 years of experience primarily in high-end trust and estate planning, administration and litigation, including knowledge of the following:

Basic planning including will and trust preparation, providing counsel on avoiding probate, protecting assets from creditors and minimizing tax ramifications when transferring wealth.
Complex wealth transfer techniques including GRATs, CRUTs, sale to IDGTs, and Dynasty Trusts in long-term or no RAP period jurisdictions.
Post-death administration including probate administrations, Heggstad petitions, 13100 affidavits, 16061.7 and other required notices, trust administration and sub-trust funding, and accountings.
Reporting gift and estate tax transactions, including preparation of Forms 709 and 706, valuation of assets, subtrust funding, GST tax issues, and basis of transferred assets.
Counseling on tax-effective methods of charitable giving, establishment of charitable foundations.
Litigation experience, including drafting petitions, responses, motions, discovery requests and responses, taking and defending depositions, and participating in mediations and trials, is a plus.
Excellent academic credentials, analytical skills and verbal and written communications skills.
Admission to the State Bar of California.

The salary range for this role is $250,000 - $330,000.
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting.
An employee's pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, and business or organizational needs.
This job is also eligible for an annual merit increase and bonus pay.
