SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Obstetrics Care Unit (OCU) at the Chinle Comprehensive Health Care Facility (CCHCF) provides critical and compassionate nursing care for patients in the labor, delivery, postpartum, and neonatal care stages. As part of the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, this role emphasizes culturally sensitive care, addressing both the medical and cultural needs of the Navajo community. RNs in this role collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team, including OB/GYNs, midwives, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure safe, holistic, and culturally appropriate patient care. This position requires adaptability in a high-stakes environment, a commitment to continuous learning, and a deep respect for Navajo cultural traditions, making it ideal for RNs dedicated to health equity and community-centered care.

Note: In addition to the salary, lodging, per diem, uniforms, laundry, and travel are also included.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conduct thorough assessments, formulate care plans, and deliver comprehensive nursing care to obstetric patients, covering the full spectrum of labor, delivery, postpartum, and neonatal care.

Administer medications, monitor patient and fetal conditions, and provide appropriate clinical interventions, ensuring adherence to evidence-based guidelines.

Utilize advanced clinical judgment and critical thinking to adapt care in response to evolving patient needs, particularly during emergencies or complications in the labor and delivery process.

Work in tandem with OB/GYNs, midwives, pediatricians, and other healthcare staff to deliver coordinated and seamless patient care.

Assist in managing patient unit assignments within the OCU, overseeing tasks such as narcotic inventory, daily checks, and logs.

Participate in cross-training within the Women's Health Clinic (WHC) when staffing needs arise, ensuring comprehensive patient coverage.

Provide education on childbirth, postpartum care, and newborn care, using culturally respectful communication techniques that honor Navajo traditions and health beliefs.

Support family involvement in the patient's care journey, recognizing the importance of family and community in Navajo culture.

Accurately document all patient interactions and clinical interventions in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) according to CCHCF and IHS standards, maintaining privacy and compliance with HIPAA.

Ensure compliance with federal, IHS, and facility-specific policies and procedures, including those mandated by the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Engage in continuous learning and training focused on Navajo cultural competence, enhancing the quality of care provided within the OCU and Women's Health Clinic.

Respectfully incorporate traditional Navajo healing practices where appropriate and collaborate with community liaisons to improve patient outcomes.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Clinical Expertise: Proficient in obstetrics nursing, including knowledge of labor and delivery, postpartum care, and neonatal health.

Critical Thinking & Decision-Making: Strong clinical judgment and the ability to respond effectively in high-stress, fast-paced situations.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication to support patient care and collaboration with a diverse healthcare team.

Cultural Sensitivity: Understanding of Navajo traditions and health beliefs, enhancing patient care and family engagement.

Technical Proficiency: Competence in EHR systems, healthcare regulations, and obstetric-specific technology.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.

Minimum of 36 months in nursing, with at least 12 months in obstetrics or maternal health.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The OCU RN will work in a hospital setting with exposure to infectious diseases and potentially hazardous materials, requiring strict adherence to PPE and safety protocols.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds, frequent standing and movement, and the capacity to perform in high-stress situations.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to work 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed to meet patient care demands.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

No regular travel anticipated for this position.

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid, unrestricted RN license from any U.S. state.

Federal background check will be conducted, and must be eligible to obtain IHS security clearance.

Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required; Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification preferred.
