This position will provide senior level space exploration mission analysis and system engineering capabilities to support conceptual design studies, technology assessments and project formulation for potential future NASA space systems.
Responsibilities:
Utilize expert knowledge of mission analysis and systems engineering for the formulation of analysis processes and development of novel concepts and approaches for a broad range of space exploration conceptual studies.
Use and develop design analysis tools to support launch vehicle and spacecraft design studies, system architecture analyses, vehicle performance analyses and parametric system trade studies.
Work across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to facilitate and execute engineering tasks and resolve systems integration issues.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to perform trade studies, define concepts of operations, develop top level requirements, and perform technology assessments.
Qualifications:
A degree in an engineering discipline is required. A degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. A minimum of 20 years of relevant experience in mission analysis and systems engineering related to advanced propulsion systems, design integration, spacecraft concept design, system requirements development and technology assessments.
The candidate is also required to have the following qualifications:
Knowledge and experience with multi-body trajectory simulation and optimization for cis-lunar, mars interplanetary missions and other space exploration missions. Experience with tools such as POST, STK, Copernicus, and ASSET is highly desirable.
Knowledge and experience in system modeling and simulation tool development (Python programming capability preferred).
Knowledge and experience in the conceptual design and analysis of advanced space transportation technologies such as chemical, nuclear thermal, and nuclear electric propulsion, solar sails, etc.
Experience in systems engineering applicable to mission architecture analysis, project formulation, system analysis and conceptual design studies including the ability to develop work assignments, schedules, and study products.
Familiarity or experience with utilizing Model Based Engineering (MBE) and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), particularly during the formulation or preliminary design phases is desired.
