Description

Under the general supervision of the Electric Superintendent, this employee manages the work of the Electric Department's work crews, including planning and coordinating crew work schedules, monitoring work crew activities and performance and ensuring all work crews are properly staffed and equipped. The employee supervises work in progress and determines supply and material needs for project work. This employee assists the Superintendent with long-term planning for the department. The employee assists in selecting new department employees. This employee interacts with contractors involved with electric utility work; informs contractors of project expectations and ensures that contractor's needs are being met. The employee makes purchasing requests utilizing the City's adopted purchasing guidelines. This employee monitors and enforces City safety regulations and procedures for all field work crews. The employee attends management and supervisory meetings. This employee supervises meter testing, including supervising meter technicians. The employee programs and maintains substation relay and ensures that relays are operating properly. This employee programs electric meters and traffic signal units. This job is considered safety sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screens.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Field Crew Management and Assistance. Manages field crews (boring, underground, secondary, and meter/substation crews) involved in a variety of Electric Department operations and tasks.

1. Manages field work crews involved in Electric Department operations and tasks.
2. Prepares field crew work schedules; ensures field crew work is coordinated with other department's work plans and that all crews are properly staffed and equipped.
3. Makes field work crew task assignments.
4. Assists field crews in moving equipment to and from work sites.
5. Monitors field crew activities and performance.

1. Makes purchases for field work crew materials and supplies.
2. Uses established City purchasing regulations when making all purchases.

1. Establishes and maintains an effective relationship with contractors performing project work for the City.
2. Communicates work or project expectations with contractors; monitors contractor performance as work progresses.
3. Responds to contractor requests for direction or information.

1. Informs all field work crews of City safety procedures, guidelines, and regulations.
2. Enforces safety guideline observance for all field crews.

1. Supervises Meter Technicians involved in substation relay and meter testing.
2. Performs substation relay and meter testing in accordance to adopted testing standards and guidelines.

1. Possess a high school diploma or GED; prefer associate's degree in field related to municipal electric system service and operation.
2. Minimum of five (5) to ten (10) years of experience in electric system operation, construction, and maintenance.
3. Ability to travel to attend professional development workshops or training programs; must be able to travel to participate in mutual aid assistance efforts.
4. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.
