Senior Structural Engineer

Our client is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to join their team.
This is a key management/technical position that serves customers in a highly regulated environment.
The Company produces uniquely designed hardened structures which are subject to various governmental regulations and various building codes, including state and IBC building codes.
The product designs are often affected by detailed customer specifications and load factors, including, but not limited to, wind, snow, and seismic requirements.
In addition, consideration of logistical factors for transportation, off-loading and installation are required.
All of these factors are to be considered for each customer project.

JOB DETAILS:

• Manage the Engineering and Design Department.
  
• Direct the creation of structural designs and related drawings and calculations for Precast Concrete Products (buildings, wall systems, and product-related foundations including slabs, perimeter beam and piers).
  
• Collaborate with customers, and project managers to ensure customer satisfaction, including compliance with customer specifications, company standards and applicable building codes.
  
• Work with the Production, Quality Assurance, Purchasing and Sales Teams to enhance cost and operational efficiency and on-time delivery.
  
• When needed, certify/seal drawings as a licensed engineer.
  Note that third-party engineers currently certify/seal drawings and assist as requested with design matters.
  We expect this third-party arrangement to continue in the future.
  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Management of Engineering and Design Department

• Directs the day-to-day efforts of the engineering and design department, including workload management and planning to meet customer demand.
  
• Ensure that the engineering files include copies of the customer P.O., sales work sheets, sales quote, and customer specifications and drawings.
  
• Monitors the drawing process with the designers from the creation of the approval drawings through redline drawings, fabrication drawings and as-built drawings.
  The Company uses Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit software.
  
• As needed, certify/seal drawings as a licensed structural engineer (SE).
  Holding multi-state licenses is a plus.
  
• Provide guidance in the design process when designers encounter differences among company standards, sales quotes, or customer specifications and drawings.
  
• Collaborate with the designers regarding the configuration of mechanical systems and electrical systems, as well as the installation of major electrical equipment, including generators and backup power systems.
  
• Ensure compliance with all state codes, IBC, and any other applicable codes.
  
• Maintains the Production Planning Status Report and the Quality Assurance State Approval Status Report.
  
• Directs and monitors the internal Quality Assurance Program.
  
• Ensure consistency of the various drawings including customer specification, approval, fabrication, and 'as-built'.
  
• Ensure that drawings are updated to 'as-built' status.
  

Interaction with the Customers and the Sales, Production, Purchasing and Quality Assurance Teams

• Interacts with the sales personnel, production personnel, purchasing personnel, quality assurance personnel, as well as customers, and engineering firms to develop drawings and establish drawing due dates.
  
• Maintain a work environment that ensures delivery dates meet customer expectations.
  
• Ensure that the structural/fabrication drawings are consistent with customer specifications and consistent with company fabrication policies.
  
• Initiate new product and product revisions development.
  

Coordination of State Approvals and Third-Party Inspections

• Works with structural designers and outside engineering firms to create the State approval drawing packages necessary to obtain State approval.
  
• Assist the internal quality assurance team with hosting outside inspections (state inspections, third-party inspections, customers, etc.) and any resulting compliance matters.
  

Continual improvement of the engineering talent

• Formalize a continuing training program for the design/engineering team and assist with and monitor daily processes to ensure an efficient workflow.
  
• Complete personnel evaluations and identify areas for improvement for each team member not less than semi-annually.
  
• Identify, manage, and report on critical success factors related to the design/engineering team.
  

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

• BS degree in Structural Engineering.
  
• Registered as a licensed professional engineer (PE).
  
• At least 5 years of experience as a Structural Engineer.
  Experience with precast concrete products, including tilt-up structures, is a plus.
  
• Experience with electrical systems and mechanical systems is a plus.
  
• Familiarity with engineering software including AutoCAD, Revit, other 3D packages, as well as familiarity with MS Office and other commonly used technologies.
  
• Familiarity with state, local and IBC building codes, with a focus on codes relating to concrete structures.
  
• Experience in collaborating effectively with customers and enhancing customer satisfaction.
  
• Experience in collaborating with independent engineers that provide professional engineering services.
  
• Ability to work effectively with regulatory agencies to obtain required approvals (state programs)
• Excellent communication skills.
  
• Must be creative and an initiative-taker.
  
• Highly motivated and able to work independently.
  
• Strong planning and critical thinking skills.
  
• Must be organized and able to manage multiple projects, monitor performance metrics, and manage deadlines.
  
• Ability to work effectively with and manage personnel.
