Hem Doctoral student in environmental science (geology/geochemistry)Doctoral student in environmental science (geology/geochemistry)ArbetsbeskrivningWelcome to Linnaeus University! Here you'll meet 2,200 staff members and 40,000 students, all united in following the vision to set knowledge in motion for sustainable societal development.
With us, research and education are conducted with an eye towards the future.
Our proximity to the business world, both locally and globally, gives us a wide reach and the ability to create change that makes an impact.
All that's needed is a place where ideas have the space to meet and grow.
That's what we've created - and you are invited.
Change starts here! The Department of Biology and Environment (BOM) is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
The research activities of this interdisciplinary department cover areas such as aquatic ecology, cell and organismal biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and technology, animal welfare, and zoonotic ecology.Subject area for the position:
Environmental science.Location until further notice:
Kalmar.Term and hours:
The doctoral studentship is limited in time in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 5, Section 7).
The studentship is full-time.Starting date:
Starting date according to agreement but ideally before April 2025. The marine environment is an important source of atmospheric methane with most of the emissions occurring in shallow, coastal areas.
This is in part related to the fact that the vast quantities of methane produced in deep marine sediments worldwide are almost completely consumed or 'microbially filtered' by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) with sulphate below the seafloor.
Gas advection in sediments can bypass the microbial filter and vent out on the seafloor constituting a source of methane to the water column and potentially to the atmosphere. The research project will investigate the recently discovered gas ebullition fields in the deep Baltic Sea, where methane is being transferred to the bottom waters and atmosphere.
More specifically, the project aims to investigate the origin of the gas using stable isotopes and porewater chemistry, the amount of gas being released to bottom waters and atmosphere, and to develop a geological model to predict the existence of other ebullition fields in the Baltic Sea and other aquatic environments.
The work includes laboratory activities and participation in offshore expeditions.
We expect strong cooperation with partners in Sweden and abroad. The Higher Education Ordinance states that anyone who is employed as a doctoral student shall primarily devote themselves to their own studies, although they may, to a limited extent, also work with education, research, and administration.
Before a doctorate has been awarded, such work may not exceed 20% of full-time work.EligibilityBasic authorization has the person who:
completed a second-cycle degree, completed course requirements totaling at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are at second-cycle level, orhas acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside Sweden. The candidate should have completed a degree matching the eligibility requirements listed above in geology, Earth science, geochemistry, or similar.
The candidate should have a high proficiency in written and spoken English and have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.Assessment CriteriaWhile the position is primarily in geology/geochemistry, documented knowledge of sedimentology and biogeochemistry would place the candidate at an advantage.
Experience working in a laboratory, notably with geochemical experiments and analyses (e.g., stable isotopes), and in offshore expeditions is desired.ContactHead of Department:
