Directly responsible to: Vice Principal - Academic
Purpose of Role: To provide leadership and management of all aspects of a specific subject area.
Role Definition: Establish professional standards for the whole Department, responsible for deployment, development and monitoring of staff, maintenance of curricular standards, allocation and use of resources, and implementation of Departmental policy.
Purpose of Job: The Head of Department is the curriculum team manager, ensuring excellent learning experiences for students and fostering their potential according to the school's goals.
General Responsibilities:

Build and sustain personal credibility by improving students' learning to a consistently high standard.
Provide leadership and focus, setting the tone and ethos of the department.
Create a climate for staff and students to develop positive attitudes towards the subject.
Contribute to and support the shared strategic vision for the school.
Represent the Department within the school and to the public.
Ensure enhancement and foster a positive image of the department and school.


A. Curriculum:

Providing oversight for curriculum review and development.
Providing leadership and modeling for teachers in curriculum and lesson planning.
Developing academic support programs as needed.
Leading weekly curriculum and assessment planning meetings.
Establishing aims and objectives for teaching departmental subjects.
Ensuring syllabuses and schemes of work are produced and monitored.
Developing structures for progression and continuity in cross-curricular work.
Contributing to the planning of the school timetable.
Planning and leading department PLTs.
Providing individualized cognitive coaching to department members.

B. Assessment & Students' Achievement Data:

Developing assessment processes compatible with international best practices.
Ensuring standards/learning outcomes are achieved in every classroom.
Preparing teachers to support students achieving high standards on external tests.
Providing leadership for analyzing students' attainment and progress data.
Organizing the setting and marking of internal tests and examinations.

C. Professional Development:

Promoting teaching and learning styles consistent with the school's policy.
Ensuring wall displays assist learning and reflect high-quality work.
Attending training sessions with the school development team.
Support teachers in preparing students for national tests.
Coordinating and monitoring the quality of work of departmental staff.
Conducting lesson observation and performance management feedback.
Facilitating the sharing of good practice in teaching and learning.
Planning for the induction of newly appointed teachers.
Promoting the professional development of all teachers in the Department.
Ensuring appropriate work is set when subject teachers are absent.
Establishing an effective structure for professional learning teams.

D. Resource Management:

Ensuring teachers have access to necessary resources.
Participating in hiring teachers in collaboration with leadership.
Monitoring utilization of resources by teachers and students.
Ensuring appropriate use of the learning management system.

E. School Leadership Team:

Being a key member of the middle leadership team.
Supporting the principal and vice principal in school development planning.
Leading the school's gifted and talented programs.
Coordinating with the school adviser on teaching and learning practices.
Accepting the leadership role in middle management.

Additional Duties:

Being first on call for daily covers when teachers are absent.
Providing supportive teaching lessons as needed.
Responsible for lesson plan checks and curriculum delivery.
Responsible for CPD of teachers in their subject areas.
Assigning any leftover teaching periods.
