ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A Personalized Learning Assistant (PLA) is a one-to-one professional assigned to a specific scholar for behavioral, health, or safety needs. The PLA is responsible for daily data collection, implementing a specific intervention plan, and working closely with the case manager of the scholar. The main goal of the PLA is to promote independence for their scholar, and as this independence is successful, they may assist in other classroom duties.
As a member of the learning support team, the PLA may also be given duties to assist in the learning support department.
Planning and Preparation for Scholar:
Creating a safe and welcoming environment
Preparing daily data collection
Pairing yourself with positive interactions
Communicating data with the case manager
Collaborating with other professionals, such as the Speech and Language Pathologist, and incorporating these goals throughout the day
Storing data in a secure location
Working with the scholar
Being direct, specific, consistent, and tenacious in communicating and enforcing very high expectations
Showing warmth, caring, respect, and fairness for all students and building strong relationships
Incorporating up-to-date interventions, practices, and support in and out of classes with the guidance of the case manager
Setting each environment up for success by incorporating outlined accommodations in each class
Advocating for the student in all classes based on needs
Needs-based Support:
The position of the PLA is needs-based. The needs of the scholar can be determined by behavior, medical, and/or safety needs with specific tasks under each.
Behavioral:
The behavior/intervention plan is followed with fidelity in all environments
Data is collected as determined by the team
Data is continually sent to and analyzed with the case manager
Medical:
Work collaboratively with the school nurse to set up a medical plan
Follow through with the plan and document when treatment was/not given
Collect daily data on medical needs and review data with the school nurse
Safety:
Identify safety concerns with the case manager/Director of Student Supports
Collect data on when the student was or was not using safe practices
Work collaboratively with the school counselor and case manager to create a safety plan#
