Koakemahi - What you'll do

Join the Public Health Agency (PHA) to support our efforts to improve health outcomes by addressing the broader social, economic, and environmental factors that play a large role in determining how healthy we are.

We are seeking a Senior Advisor to lead strategic initiatives, provide expert policy advice and collaborate across sectors to address these wider determinants of health, especially housing and food systems.

You will support and lead public health work programmes, which will require strong working relationships with key government agencies, organisations, and other partners.
You'll work closely with the Determinants of Health team, the PHA and wider Ministry to develop strategic advice on the determinants of health, including improving planning and decision-making processes.
You'll also guide and mentor other team members to build the team's overall capability.

We are looking for someone with a strong background in public health in government or non-government settings.
Your ability to collaborate across sectors, think critically and provide strategic advice will be key to success in this role.
This is an exciting opportunity to improve policy beyond the health sector to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field and/or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate policies and strategies addressing the social, economic, and environmental determinants of health.
  • Ability to provide high quality advice, influence decision-making, and lead cross-sector teams to achieve strategic health outcomes.
  • Experience building and maintaining partnerships with government, non-government, community organisations, and other diverse stakeholders.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience managing complex projects, setting priorities, and delivering results within timelines and budgets.
  • Critical thinking, sound judgement and flexibility required to navigate a dynamic policy environment and identify innovative solutions.
  • Commitment to promoting health equity and addressing systemic barriers that contribute to health inequities.

At Manatū Hauora - Ministry of Health we are the kaitiaki of the health system, providing leadership and driving strategy and performance.
We regulate the health sector and are the primary source of advice on health matters.

The Determinants of Health team builds and maintains cross-agency partnerships to advance progress on the wider determinants of health and wellbeing.
We focus on housing, food systems and opportunities to collaborate with local government.
